Why does food I used to eat all the time now make me sick?

If you clean up your diet on Code Red, but decide to go back to your old way of eating, you may be in for an unexpected surprise.

See, it’s very common for foods you used to eat “with no problem” to:

1) Not taste as good as you remember
2) Make you sick (stomach upset/bloating and/or poop problems)
3) Cause pain – in your joints, in the form of headaches, or to reignite pain from chronic conditions like fibromyalgia or arthritis

Sometimes this doesn’t happen until maintenance (which, by the way, is what we want – for you to focus and get the weight off, then strategically reintroduce foods if you want).

You get the weight off, and decide to reintroduce something you used to eat, and boy does it not go like you thought.

So why does this happen?

Why is it you seemed to handle the food fine when you were obese and sick, but now that you’re eating clean, it wipes the floor with you?

Here are three reasons this happens.

Reason #1: Your body is rejecting that food.

It could be as simple as your body saying, “This food doesn’t sit well with me. Don’t eat it.”

It may have been “telling” you before, but either you weren’t listening, or your body was in such poor wellness that its message was drowned out by all the other problems.

Either way, if you reintroduce a food in maintenance and your body doesn’t like it, even after multiple reintroductions, it’s probably best not to eat it.

Reason #2: Your gut enzymes have changed to match what you’re eating on Code Red, and they don’t like this food you used to eat.

Our gut enzymes adapt to process what we consistently eat. If you remove a food in weight loss mode, then bring it back in maintenance, it could just be that your body stopped making the enzymes to comfortably digest it.

The only way to know is to resume eating it (provided you can do so without gaining your weight back), and see if that changes.

Reason #3: There’s a stress, trauma, or other mental issue associated with that food.

If you’re an emotional eater, you’ve probably eaten to self-soothe from stress, anxiety, or other difficult emotions.

If you remove foods from your diet that you used to self-soothe, then bring them back, the emotions you tried to numb with the food may come along with them, showing up as pain or discomfort in your body.

That pain or discomfort may have been there before Code Red, but you were so used to it, you didn’t make the connection.

It could also just be your body “remembering” in some way that shows up as pain or discomfort.

Our bodies are amazing and complex, which is one of many reasons I’m ALWAYS telling you to listen to your body.

Not only will it help you stick to using food for fuel, which helps you get your weight off, it’ll also help you find what works for you.

Exactly what your body’s signals mean, in every instance, is a separate discussion that cannot possibly be summed up in a blog post, but when it comes to bringing back foods you used to eat “with no problem,” now you understand what’s probably going on.

All the more reason to stick to the foods to eat on Code Red. Bringing back the crap does you ZERO good!
