Recently (at the time of this post) I got some pretty scary news about someone I love.
They’re okay and I’m okay, but man. It wasn’t what I was expecting to hear.
When stuff happens that you’re not expecting, what most people do is revert to their “default” coping mechanism.
A lot of times, that’s eating…eating because you don’t know what else to do and eating feels like you’re doing something…
Eating to “feel better”….
Eating to numb the feelings you don’t wanna feel…
And then, when the dust settles (which it ALWAYS does), you look around and wonder what the heck happened. How’d that 50 pounds pile back on so freaking fast??
Usually there’s heaps of guilt and shame for “losing control,” too.
The mainstream view of food is that it’s a coping mechanism, a friend, a reward, a punishment, a celebration…basically everything EXCEPT fuel.
And as a result, most people don’t know how to cope with ANYTHING without eating.
I get it. I’ve done my share of emotional eating in my life.
AND, to paraphrase what one of my maintenance Rebels said after losing her father-in-law, stuffing your face doesn’t factually change what happened.
Your loved one is still gone.
You still lost your job.
Your grandson was still arrested for underage drinking.
What you eat does NOTHING to help or change what happened.
Listen, I know you get what I’m saying.
I also know it’s easy to commit to doing better when you’re not smack in the middle of one of life’s curveballs.
It’s when the rug’s just been pulled out from under you that things get hairy.
THAT is where most people choose (even though it doesn’t feel like a choice, it is) to revert to their old coping mechanisms instead of fighting for a new way.
That “tipping point” between reverting to your old ways or fighting for your new ones is when support from your fellow Rebels is gonna be KEY.
While everyone else is telling you to “eat what you want” and that “you deserve this,” we’ll encourage you to stay the course with your eating so that when the dust settles, you aren’t left with 20+ pounds to re-lose.
THAT is what you deserve…
NOT type 2 diabetes, joint pain, and obesity brought on by a crap diet.
