Three travel pitfalls that cause weight gain (hint – it’s not just food!)

If you asked most people what causes them to gain weight when they travel, most would sheepishly point out overeating, and eating things you don’t eat at home on a day to day basis.

Eating too much, and eating more junk than usual, both absolutely contribute to travel weight gain.

But they’re far from the ONLY things that contribute.

Here are three more things that cause weight gain when you travel.

1. Lack of sleep (or poor quality sleep).

Being outside your home environment can interfere with both your sleep schedule, and your quality of sleep.

Not only does lack of sleep (or poor quality sleep) contribute to a stall, it may actually cause you to GAIN weight.

In combination with overeating, and eating more junk, it’s a surefire way to quickly pack on the pounds.

Weight gain caused by slack of sleep, when you don’t combine it with overeating, or eating junk, is temporary, and usually comes off in a day or two when you get proper sleep again.

But you’ve gotta get right on it, not keep packing on the pounds. It’s a slippery slope into weight regain.

Control your sleep environment and schedule as much as you possibly can on your trips.

Bring sleep supplements, a sleep mask, and even ear plugs. Protect your sleep, even on trips!

2. Swelling from travel.

Changes in pressure while on an airplane, and/or sitting down for hours at a time (whether in a plane or car), can lead to travel weight gain in the form of swelling.

You may notice that your ankles look swollen when you get off the plane, or maybe it’s your whole leg that swells.

It’s water weight, and it’s temporary, but it may be uncomfortable, and it may show on the scale.

Some Rebels manage it by wearing compression stockings and/or correctly dry brushing the limbs that swell, which improves circulation.

Again, it’s temporary and will come off when the swelling goes down, so no need to panic.

3. Sunburns

That’s right! Sunburns may lead to weight gain, and here’s why.

If your skin is sun burned, that means it’s damaged. When a part of our body is damaged, the healing process involves temporary inflammation at the site of the injury, along with temporary water weight to help protect the injury as your body begins healing. Temporary water weight means temporary weight gain.

Since sunburns are a form of damage to the body, they come with inflammation and temporary weight gain.

Again, it’s temporary, and will eventually come off after your body has achieved a certain level of healing, just like it does when you gain weight after surgery.

So there you go: Three travel pitfalls that can lead to weight gain.

The great news is, they’re all temporary…so long as you don’t combine them with ongoing overeating and junk food.

To prevent permanent weight gain, put the brakes on and get your weight back down immediately!
