Cold and flu season is here, and chances are you know somebody who’s got one or the other.

For most people, a cold doesn’t come with nausea. It’s the flu that disrupts our appetite!

If you’ve read my book or joined a 10 Pound Takedown, you know that on the Code Red Lifestyle, we eat meat, vegetables, nuts, eggs, seeds, seafood, and healthy fat.

But the foods we’re used to eating when we get the flu – and that upset stomach that comes with it – aren’t Code Red approved.

This includes: Soda (like 7up), Ginger Ale, saltine crackers, the noodles in chicken noodle soup, and toast. Why?

Because those foods are either packed with sugar, or turn to sugar once they’re digested. Sugar causes inflammation, and inflammation leads to disease.

The last thing you need to do when you’re sick is eat foods that lead to disease!

So, what should you do to get through the flu and stay Code Red-approved?

1) First of all, remember that you don’t “have” to eat! Especially if you vomit the food back up. If that keeps happening, stop trying to force food.

2) Drink extra water. Your body can use it to help flush out the sickness. If drinking your water cold works for you, great – just remember, you can also drink it warm, and even add a tea bag for a little flavor.

3) Get extra sleep. Your body does its best healing when you sleep, so it makes sense that when you’re sick, extra sleep will expedite the healing process!

4) IF you find you do have an appetite, eat bland foods, like plain chicken breast, avocado, or chicken, beef, or veggie broth. (Just the broth – no noodles!)

Bone broth is an exceptional choice, because it’s nutritious and will keep you hydrated. You can find it in some stores and on Amazon; or you can try making your own.

For most people it’s a paradigm shift to accept that you can get through a stomach flu without crackers and soda, but you absolutely can! Follow my four tips above, and feel better sooner rather than later!
