When most people decide to undertake a transformation like losing weight, what do you think they do?
Probably the same things you’ve done.
– They change what they’re DOING
– They learn NEW information
– They try and change their EXTERNAL environment in some way
Notice anything missing there?
If you don’t, then like most people (including me for the longest time), you’ve probably never been taught the missing piece in EVERY transformation…which is…
Your identity.
Your identity is just who YOU believe you are in some way (and it may be an unconscious-level belief).
When you use behavior change, new information, and new circumstances to force your transformation…and your identity doesn’t shift in the process…then all that stuff feels really hard.
Even YEARS later, there can be exhausting inner conflict between your old ways and your new ways if your identity didn’t shift far enough.
But when your identity shifts, you start to more easily and effortlessly BE the type of person who gets and keeps the result you want.
You start WANTING to do stuff the new way MORE than you want those old ways.
When that happens, doing “the work” feels less and less like work…because you’re not doing as much as you are BEING.
Let me put this another way to help you understand how critical it is to your success.
Does a bird have to “try hard” to be a bird and do what birds do (like fly and crap on people’s cars right after they’ve washed them)?
How about a fish? Does a fish have to try hard to be a fish (like swim and breathe underwater)?
In both cases, no, obviously not.
Birds fly because it’s what they do when they’re BEING birds.
Fish swim because it’s what they do when they’re BEING fish.
When it’s who you truly believe you ARE, it’s what you naturally DO.
And if you truly believe, especially on an unconscious level, that you’re someone with a weight problem or someone who can’t keep off weight, then doing what it takes to STAY “someone with a weight problem” will feel the easiest.
(I mean, seriously. Do you have to “try hard” to gain back weight?)
But when you shift your weight-related identity from whatever it is now into a version of you who wants to get and keep the weight off MORE than you want the beliefs and behaviors that led to your weight problem.
As that starts to happen, doing what you already know to do to drop the weight, but aren’t doing, starts feeling easier.
Bottom line: Who YOU believe you are has to shift on an unconscious level. Once it does, the transformation you want – like weight loss – will finally stick.
