Night shift work tips for success on the Code Red Lifestyle™

A lot of my Rebels are in the medical field, which means night shift work.

When my night shift Rebels first read my Rules To Consistent Weight Loss, they feel overwhelmed at the idea of waiting so many hours between meals, of not snacking, and of not being able to eat right before they go to sleep.

They think, “How am I going to apply this when I work nights?”

First, let me explain the two main reasons we don’t eat before bed.

1) Night time is when your body does its very best healing. If it’s busy digesting food–which takes two-thirds of our body’s energy–there’s very little energy left for healing.

2) Eating right before you fall asleep is one of the fastest ways to get fat. It’s what Japanese sumo wrestlers do to get so huge! And it’s what my sister, Cari, used to do, back when she was a night shift nurse AND when she was at her heaviest weight.

Back to night shifts. I have tons of successful Rebels who work night shifts, and they have it all figured out.

All you do is simply this: Flip the schedule.

The same rules apply, whether you work days or nights (i.e. how long you wait between meals, no snacking, no eating right before bed).

It’s about the number of hours you’re awake, not whether those hours are daytime or nighttime.

Here’s what I mean. A day shift worker might get up at 6 a.m., eat meal one at 7 a.m., meal two at 3 p.m., go to bed at 9 p.m., and fall asleep by 10 p.m. That’s eight hours of sleep, and plenty of space between meal two and bed time.

If you’re a night shift worker, let’s say you go to work at 11 p.m. and come home at 7 a.m.

You’d eat meal 1 before you head to work, say at 9:30 p.m., and eat lunch at around 3:30 a.m. And when you got home, let’s say you went to bed at 10 a.m. and got up at 6 p.m.

You got your eight hours of sleep. You had plenty of space between meal two and your bed time, just like the day shift worker.

Night shift and the Code Red Lifestyle™ work just as well as day shift and the Code Red Lifestyle™.

“Flip” the simple rules to your night shift hours. That’s really all it takes!
