I can’t lose weight if I’m always hungry, Cristy!

Look, I’ll be the first to admit that hunger is a distracting sensation.
I’ll also be the first to admit that constantly feeling hungry is pretty miserable.
Now, all that being said, feeling hungry can be a GOOD thing. Here are three reasons why:
1) Hunger between meals means you didn’t overeat.
If you’re trying to lose weight, and you don’t get hungry before your next meal, it could mean you ate too much (depending on how long ago your last meal was).
We’re so conditioned in society to eat “at meal time,” whether or not we’re hungry. But eating when you’re not hungry is a proven way to get and stay fat!
2) Hunger can be a signal you aren’t getting nutrients from your food.
This is especially true if you live on processed foods and beverages, junk food, sweets, and fast food.
First of all, your body doesn’t know what to do with low-quality foods like these, and it leads to a constant urge to eat, because your body’s not being nourished on a cellular level.
Second, low-quality foods disrupt your hormones. Since the sensation of hunger is caused by fluctuations in the hormones leptin and ghrelin, food that disrupts hormones will also disrupt your appetite. You may never feel hungry, or you may feel hungry all the time.
3) Hunger can mean you aren’t getting enough quality sleep.
When you’re not getting enough quality sleep, your body is biologically programmed to assume that falling asleep will endanger your life. So it sends hunger signals to get you to eat something, so you’ll get an energy boost and be able to stay awake.
The food you’ll most often crave when you’re sleep-deprived is sugar, because sugar, a.k.a. glucose, is a source of instant energy. That’s a problem, because if you’re trying to lose weight, sugar is the LAST thing you wanna be craving!
Managing hunger during weight loss comes down to getting enough quality sleep, staying hydrated with good ol’ water, and eating the right healthy, FILLING foods, while also avoiding foods that trigger cravings and cause weight gain and weight loss stalls.
