How do I know if the weight I’m losing is fat or muscle?

To be honest, most people who join the Code Red Lifestyle™ aren’t even thinking about this. They just want the weight gone, because they know that if you’re carrying too much extra weight, and you’re unhappy about it, it’s not because the extra weight you’re carrying is muscle. It’s because it’s fat!

But every so often, someone contacts me or my team to ask whether they will lose only fat, or will also lose muscle, on Code Red.

I get why they’re asking. For one, plenty of programs out there promise that you can lose fat AND build muscle on their program.

For another, no one wants to lose muscle mass. Most people agree that muscle looks better than fat in every way, shape, and form.

Where people really screw this up is thinking that you can eat for performance and still lose all the extra body fat.

I’ve been in bodybuilding competitions, I’ve trained celebrities, I’ve helped tens of thousands of people from all over the world lose weight, and I’ve even gotten fat, and I can tell you with absolute certainty: Eating for weight loss and eating for performance are as far apart as the east is from the west.

For that reason – and many others – Code Red is an “eat for weight loss” program, not an “eat to build muscle and get stronger” program.

If you’re wanting to build muscle, you’re WAY better off getting your weight off with Code Red weight loss mode, THEN focusing on muscle-building. You do not get extra calories or extra protein on Code Red if you decide to lift weights in weight loss mode, because, like I said, we eat for weight loss, not for performance.

As for telling whether the weight you’re losing is fat or muscle, it’s impossible to say without an accurate body composition test. Worrying about it is WAY overthinking things.

For the record, Code Red is muscle-sparing.

But for the sake of argument, let’s say you do lose a little muscle.

The great thing about muscle is that you can build it, even if you lose some.

So get your weight off with Code Red, then build muscle without having to ALSO worry about losing your extra body fat.

It’s freeing to lift weights and build muscle without also having to wonder whether you’re losing “enough” fat.

A lot of die-hard weight lifters won’t like me saying any of this, but I stand by it.

Get your weight off, THEN build muscle. Keep it simple and separate for best results on Code Red.
