Don’t get caught on your back foot

In boxing we have a saying: Don’t get caught on your back foot.

Here’s what that means.

In a fight, the person who maintains their center of gravity has a HUGE advantage.

If you’re caught on your back foot, it means you’ve put more of your weight on that back foot, instead of equally distributing your weight between your front foot and back foot.

If an opponent catches you on your back foot, it’s a lot less work for them to push you back, and a skilled opponent who spots an opening like that is probably gonna get you.

It may not sound like a big deal, but in the ring if your opponent’s able to push you back like that, you’ll get marked down.

See, not every fight ends in knockout, or even a technical knockout.

You also get scored based on how you perform in the fight.

So if you’re the boxer who’s always caught on your back foot, and you’re taking more hits than you’re dishing out, you can easily lose the fight even if your opponent doesn’t actually knock you out.

You’ve probably noticed that this week I’ve talked a lot about coming back to Code Red if you’ve fallen off the wagon.

That’s because I’m seeing there are Rebels who were caught on their back foot last year, and are still reeling from it.

The “reeling” happens in a fight, too – especially if you let your opponent get in your head.

Meaning, if you start to feel beat down mentally just because your opponent got a punch in, it’s the beginning of the end.

It doesn’t mean the fight’s over. It just means you’ve gotta keep your head in the game, because a strong head game is as important as keeping your center of gravity.

One thing I was taught early on in boxing is, you’re gonna get hit. Plan on it.

Yeah, you wanna avoid it whenever you can, but thinking you suck and the fight’s over just because you got hit chips away at your focus. You start losing your cool and making mistakes.

So what do you do?

You forget that punch and keep going.

If that’s where you’re at…if you were caught on your back foot and took some hits, hear me when I say this:

The fight ain’t over ’til it’s over.

Giving up just because you made some mistakes won’t fix ANYTHING.
