Let’s talk about those dairy myths!

Did you know human beings are the only species that drinks another species’ milk?

We’re also the only species that drinks milk after we’ve been weaned.

There’s a lot of myths floating around about dairy, and most of them are perpetuated by the dairy industry, to keep them in business.

Let’s take a look at some of these myths.

“Milk does a body good.”

Why, exactly? Because a commercial with some athlete or celebrity drinking it says so?

Your body does just fine without milk. In fact, milk (especially the processed cow’s milk available on store shelves these days) is a highly inflammatory food.

It’s not “coincidence” that so many people suffer dairy allergies. Most of them don’t even realize it’s happening!

The fastest way to tell is to eliminate all dairy from your diet for at least two weeks, and see how you feel.

The symptoms of a dairy allergy vary, but can include swelling, bloating, rashes, and digestive issues.

“You need milk for calcium.”

This one is the biggest fallacy of them all!

Half a cup of spinach has more calcium than a glass of cow’s milk. Chia seeds, broccoli, kale, and nuts are all excellent sources of calcium.

And unlike the calcium in cow’s milk, plant-based calcium is much easier for our bodies to absorb. We only absorb about a third of the calcium present in milk, whereas we absorb 50 to 64% of the calcium in plant-based sources.

“You need milk for Vitamin D.”

What’s hilarious about this one is that vitamin D doesn’t occur naturally in milk! It has to be added! I take a supplement to get my Vitamin D in.

“You need milk for fat and protein.”

Not true at all! Nuts have plenty of fat and protein. Meats have plenty of protein, and many of them, like steak, bacon, and pork chops, also have plenty of fat.

Avocados have loads of healthy fats, as do eggs, and chia, flax, and sunflower seeds, just to name a few!

Another zinger I’ve heard is that you “need” dairy to lose weight.

No, you do not. In fact, some people gain weight when they eat dairy.

Do I allow dairy in weight loss mode on the Code Red Lifestyle?

Yes, but only full-fat versions of certain items. (Cheese is not one of them!) It’s because most people can eat full-fat dairy and still lose weight.

Plus, the low-fat or non-fat versions of these foods have added sugar (let’s face it, they’d be disgusting without it!).

But when my clients’ weight loss stalls, cutting out dairy is one of the first things we try.

“Cristy, are you telling me to give up dairy?”

Since I still enjoy cream in my coffee, it would be hypocritical of me to suggest you give up dairy.

But I am going to suggest that, at the very least, you go easy on it. If you’re really committed to improving your health, eliminate all dairy from your diet for at least two weeks, and see how you feel! What have you got to lose?

Breast milk from our own species, ingested when we’re babies, is incredibly healthy.

But after we’re weaned, we absolutely do not need dairy!
