What’s the deal with Code Red and cholesterol?

“Should I be concerned about my cholesterol, eating all this bacon, eggs and fat?”

That’s a question I get a lot on the Code Red Lifestyle.

It’s completely understandable, since we’ve been hearing for decades that high cholesterol will kill you, and that fat causes high cholesterol.

So what’s the deal with cholesterol and eating high-fat? Will it raise cholesterol? Is cholesterol the enemy we’re led to believe it is?

Let’s tackle these subjects one at a time.

The first thing we need to establish is that cholesterol is a complicated subject.

That means throwing around blanket statements about high cholesterol being a death sentence is not only misleading, it’s oversimplifying cholesterol and its role in health.

Now, can a high-fat, low-carb lifestyle cause your cholesterol to increase?

In many people who eat high-fat/low-carb, cholesterol actually drops.

But there are a few people who experience an increase in cholesterol, and here’s why.

When you switch to a high fat lifestyle, the reason cholesterol may increase initially has to do with your fat cells.

As you lose weight, fat cells start shrinking.

When that happens, triglycerides and cholesterol, which are both stored in fat cells, are released into your body.

Your body can use triglycerides for energy, but it can’t do the same with cholesterol.

That means the amount of cholesterol circulating in your blood stream will increase, until your body can digest it and release it through the bile in your liver.

Over time, serum levels of cholesterol go down in most people.

As for whether cholesterol is the enemy, recent studies show that arteries are damaged by high blood sugar, not the dietary cholesterol you consume.

Bacon and eggs are high in dietary fat, but they don’t spike your blood sugar the way “healthy whole grains,” for example, do.

Now, just so we’re clear, my intention isn’t to contradict your doctor.

But I will suggest you do your own research and decide for yourself.
