The flight attendant gasped and threw her cupped hands over her mouth as she stared at me.
“Cristy Code Red??” she exclaimed. “I can’t believe it’s really you!”
This was on one of my flights back from Arizona last year.
I chatted with this flight attendant, and it came out that she and some friends had done Code Red, lost weight and felt better, then quit following the program and gained back their weight.
It was great to talk to her, and I’m glad she spoke up.
It wasn’t great to hear that she quit following the program.
A lot of times, people who quit following the Code Red Lifestyle™ treated it like a diet. They saw it as a temporary change to lose some weight, before returning to what got them fat and sick in the first place.
Other times, the person who falls off the wagon IS in pain, and wants things to be different; yet deep down, is also scared of things being different.
If you’ve been overweight for a long time – maybe as long as you can remember – being overweight is a big part of your identity (even if you don’t want it to be).
The thought of NOT being that version of you anymore, even if it sucks, can be terrifying on a very primal level.
And instead of fighting to be different, you start fighting to stay the same.
(Fighting to stay the same is NOT confined to weight loss, by the way.)
It’s interesting we do that…because the change we actually WANT only comes from being different in some way from who and what we are now.
That’s most definitely true of surviving the holidays without gaining 10 or more pounds, and setting yourself back by days, weeks, maybe even MONTHS.
Going about the holidays the same way you always have will get you the same results you’ve always gotten.
It doesn’t HAVE to keep being that way.
You can get a copy of my Code Red Cookbook and make healthier holiday meals this year.
You can eat when you feel satisfied instead of pigging out until you’re stuffed.
You can start the new year weight the same (or even LESS) than you do now.
The choice is yours.
Will you choose to repeat the same pattern from years past and “hope this time will be different” even though YOU aren’t doing things differently?
Or will you make some simple shifts and finally get a different result?
