Reward yourself…just not with food!

I encourage my clients to plan rewards for hitting their weight loss goals…but those rewards have to be unrelated to food.

What sense does it make to lose 25 pounds and reward yourself by inhaling half a chocolate cheesecake and gaining five of those pounds back?

We’re people, not dogs – we don’t need “good girl” and “good boy” food treats.

Rewarding ourselves with FOOD – and even using it as a punishment, like sending the kids to bed without dinner – leads to emotional eating, weight gain, health problems, and in extreme cases, eating disorders.

But rewards for achieving your goals? I’m ALL for that. There’s nothing wrong with incentives to motivate you.

It’s why I offer prizes in my 10 Pound Takedown Challenge. Humans are wired to be competitive, and rewards motivate us.

But those rewards need to be good for us, not destructive.

If you’re working on getting your weight down, plan out some non-food rewards for every 10, 25, 50 pounds – even 100 pounds!

Choose activities you love, or even something like a new purse, or a manicure. Whatever motivates YOU…including praise from others! If that means more to you than activities and possessions, share your success with someone who’ll be proud of you.

Losing weight is no easy feat. Staying motivated is a big part of success, and giving yourself incentives is a great way to do it.

Plan them out, and most important of all, follow through with your reward when you reach each goal. Losing that 10 pounds IS a big deal, and I want you to treat it as such!
