Years before we met, my (now) husband, Miles, was working in a high-stress job as an executive of a Fortune 500 company in a dying industry.
He traveled extensively, leaving his kids, sleeping in hotels and eating like crap. Plus, he drank. A LOT.
He drank to numb the stress. He drank to numb the anxiety. He drank to fall asleep.
In 2006, Miles was rushed to the hospital with what he thought was a heart attack, but it ended up being a stress-induced anxiety attack.
Upon retiring in 2008 at 49 years old, Miles knew he needed to make a change.
His newfound life of “freedom” left him feeling empty, worthless and bored.
He was fat, out of shape (he’d never really been in shape) and needed a goal. So, he took up road cycling.
Miles loved enduring the pain of 100 mile rides. He thrived on the challenge of pushing himself hard. But…he was still fat.
Even after hiring a personal trainer and learning how to lift weights, he was still fat. What gives?
In 2012, after we got together, I started Miles on the Code Red Lifestyle™.
Eating a diet low in carbs was unthinkable to a long-distance cyclist, but he was sick of having a fat tummy and being overweight.
Eating a high-fat, low-carb diet worked! Miles lost weight, and his riding actually improved because his body was now using his own stored fat as fuel, instead of pasta and fruit juice!
Ten years later, at age 63, Miles eats “mostly” Code Red and keeps his weight between 168 and 172.
His bloodwork is excellent, and he even survived a nephrectomy in 2020. He continues to ride his road and mountain bike around 200 miles a week, and lifts weights 3 days a week.
Miles experienced, first-hand, that exercise has nothing to do with weight loss. Losing weight is 100% diet-related. You can’t out-train a bad diet, or Miles would have done that before we met.
