Why “muscle ways more than fat” is a lie

Have you heard a gym rat, personal trainer, fitness guru, or your best friend tell you that muscle weighs more than fat?

Maybe you even run around saying it!

But that statement is a lie. How do I know?

Because a pound is a pound. One pound of feathers weighs the same as one pound of brick.

One pound of rubber weighs the same as one pound of concrete.

And one pound of muscle weighs the same as one pound of fat.

It all weighs ONE pound. There aren’t magic feather pounds and mystical concrete pounds.

So why, then, do people say muscle weighs more than fat?

It probably has something to do with the fact muscle takes up less space than fat.

As you can see in the photo above, 5 pounds of muscle is a lot more compact than 5 pounds of fat.

So if you were to add more muscle to the pic above, until, visually, it appeared there were similar amounts of fat and muscle, then it would seem that muscle weighs more than fat.

But, it doesn’t. A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same: A pound.
