Is it really better to lose weight SLOWLY?

Most so-called weight loss “experts” insist slow weight loss is better.

They have reasons that sound valid, sure.

But slow weight loss isn’t very motivating, is it?

Who wants to spend a MONTH losing ONE freaking pound??

On the flip side of that, rapid weight loss is a lot more exciting, and it’s easier to stay motivated…but there’s a point where losing too much weight too quickly is unsafe.

So how fast is too fast?

And is slow weight loss REALLY more sustainable?

Let’s take these questions one at a time.

Most mainstream weight loss recommendations suggest 1-2 pounds a week for “safe, sustainable weight loss.”

My clients often lose that much in ONE DAY. You can safely lose more than 1-2 pounds a week when you do it with real food, water, and sleep. I do NOT support crazy gimmicks that manipulate your body chemistry. I support giving your body the fuel it was designed to utilize.

On NBC’s The Biggest Loser, there were contestants who lost 30 pounds in ONE WEEK.

To me, THAT is what constitutes rapid weight loss, and I don’t call that safe or sustainable.

Now let’s talk about whether slow weight loss is more sustainable.

The short answer: No. Losing the weight slowly is no guarantee you’ll keep it off.

When your weight comes off at a snail’s pace, it’s not very motivating, and you may give up and go back to your old ways before you even put a dent in your weight.

I definitely support changing your lifestyle in a sustainable way.

What I don’t agree with is the idea you can’t do that AND lose your weight more quickly than 1-2 pounds a week.

You absolutely can, because my clients do it all the time.

Some weeks, yes, they lose in the 1-2 pound range.

Other weeks, they’ll lose more than that. Not 30 pounds in one week, but definitely more than 1 or 2 pounds!

Bottom line: Slow weight loss is not better than rapid weight loss. And while there is such a thing as losing too much weight too quickly, you can safely lose your weight faster than you think, simply by giving your body the fuel it’s designed to run on.

That fuel is real food, water, and sleep.

It couldn’t be simpler.
