“I’ll never be happy again if I can’t eat my favorite bad foods!” ????

Most people consider food the easiest way to escape, self-sooth, and “have fun.”

That’s why they can’t imagine coping with life or having fun if food isn’t involved.

So as tired as they might be of having a weight problem, and all the problems that come with it – or even the physical ailments and disease associated with poor diet – the thought of “giving up” their foods is often unbearable.

“But how will I have fun?”

“But how will I be happy?”

“But how will I get through the day?”

“But how will I feel better?”

Whether or not you consciously realize it, questions like these run through your mind at the thought of never again eating sweets, pizza, or whatever your particular “favorite foods” are that you’re terrified to give up, even temporarily.

I’d like you to stop and really think about that for a few minutes.

You’re living with 200 pounds of extra body fat that’s making you miserable…because the thought of not eating a brownie is “unbearable?”

So a brownie has THAT much power and control over you?

You’re gonna sacrifice yourself at the “feet” of the Almighty Brownie?

Really???

Look, I get it. And if an occasional brownie was the worst of your problems, I wouldn’t be writing this article.

But for most people reading this, an occasional brownie, occasional slice or two of pizza, or occasional glass of wine isn’t what’s going on.

You’re eating that stuff (and more) on a regular basis, while telling yourself, “I need my maple bars” or “I need my soda” or “I need my chips.”

No one actually NEEDS those foods.

But it feels like it because you’re used to using food for emotional support, or to “feel good,” or to self-soothe, or whatever your reasons are.

Take a step back and really be honest with yourself, and you’ll probably see that food isn’t the only way to feel better or cope with life.

It’s DEFINITELY not the only way to feel happy. The belief you’ll never be happy again if you aren’t eating your “favorite foods” is pretty melodramatic.

I mean…NEVER? There’s nothing else on the entire planet that makes you happy?

That seems pretty unlikely to me.

When you’re facing the prospect of using food for fuel, instead of for some kind of escape, fun, or emotional support, I get why it feels scary.

But take a few minutes and think clearly about (or journal, if that works for you), and you’ll see that food really isn’t the only way to be happy, have fun, connect with others, or get through those rough moments.

Let that fact bring you some peace, so that you can take your weight loss a day at a time, get the weight off, and work with Code Red to keep it off.
