As I stepped out of the elevator, there they were…
ONE HUNDRED DONUTS, recently delivered and stacked in boxes upon boxes on the front desk of The Grove Hotel…
So many boxes, in fact, that they needed a cart to be able to haul them in one trip.
I figured they were for guests at one of the two conferences being held at the hotel that week.
I’m sure the conference hosts thought they were doing something nice for their guests.
But talk about the WORST possible food you could serve guests at a conference.
Seriously, think about it.
– You’re tired because you probably didn’t sleep very well, since you’re at a hotel outside your routine, instead of home in your own bed.
– You probably didn’t make good food choices the night before, because “everybody went out” and you wanted to fit in (which may also be why you didn’t sleep well).
– You’re sitting there on your butt, all day long, under florescent lights, in an uncomfortable chair.
– You’re dehydrated because you don’t wanna get up a bunch of times to pee.
You’re tired, you’re hungry, your willpower’s already at rock bottom, and your body’s sending you signals to eat sugar because sugar’s a quick source of energy…
And then they bring in DONUTS…which are roughly 600 calories EACH…have right around 36 grams of sugar EACH (depending on the type of donut)…and smell AMAZING.
If you eat even one, you’re gonna have a massive blood sugar spike as your system gets flooded with 2-3 days’ worth of sugar…
And after that initial energy buzz wears off, you’ll come crashing down like a frail building in a hurricane.
Until the sugar leaves your system hours later, it’ll take something drastic, like a massive caffeine infusion, or even MORE sugar, to lift you back up.
It’s the vicious hamster wheel that always comes with eating that much sugar…especially if you’re already sleep-deprived and dehydrated.
I felt sorry for the people at this conference, because if I were in the audience, I’d want a donut, too.
It’s REALLY hard to make good decisions during a conference – not impossible, just hard – because the whole deck is stacked against you…
– Lack of sleep
– Lack of water
– Sitting all day
– Having to focus for long periods of time
– Tempting crap food left and right
Events and conferences are MINE FIELDS when you’re trying to eat in a healthy way. You’re proud of yourself when you stay on track the whole time (and rightly so!).
But wouldn’t it be great to go to an event where you didn’t have to go to war with yourself the whole time over whether or not to eat the crap food?
There may not be a lot of events like that for you to choose from.
But you have a say in the food you bring into your own home.
When it’s there, and it’s tempting to you, you’ll think about it constantly, just like you would a poisonous snake if you knew there was one in the grass in your front yard.
There’s a reason one of my type 3 rules for keeping your weight off is to keep the junk out of your house.
If it’s there, you’ll want to eat it.
Clear it out, and free up your bandwidth to do something that’ll actually HELP you take your life back!
