This is what I tell clients who freak out about the holidays

“Cristy, I’m sooooo nervous about the holidays!”

I hear this every single year from a portion of my clients, who are scared to be near the sweets and booze that accompany the holiday season.

They want to stay on track, but like a smoker who just quit smoking, or an alcoholic who just quit drinking, they don’t quite trust themselves not to cave in.

No one ties us down and shoves food in our mouths, right? Ain’t nobody getting tortured here!

But I get why they’re uneasy. They’re used to caving to those impulses and urges.

So when these clients freak out about the holidays (or even things like spring break and vacations), here are some things I tell them:

1) You control what goes in your mouth.

You decide to pick up the fork with food on it and eat from it. Instead of deciding to doing that, decide not to.

Make your mind up that that’s the way it is, and don’t give yourself any other option.

If you have to stand as far away from the food table as possible, chew gum, or bring your own food, then absolutely do it. Control your situation wherever you can.

2) Don’t make it harder than it needs to be.

Wringing your hands and expending all your mental energy freaking out makes it way harder than it needs to be.

I’m not saying I don’t get it. I do. I used to be addicted to sugar and Diet Coke, so I know exactly what you’re going through.

But instead of working yourself into a white-hot ball of anxiety over a plate of sugar cookies, take a deep breath and have some faith in yourself.

Remember, you have choices! Make ones that leave you feeling good about yourself.

3) You don’t need anyone’s permission to make healthier choices.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks about your decision to join the Code Red Lifestyle! It’s your body and your life.

If other people are interested and want to hear more, by all means!

But you don’t owe anyone an explanation, and they don’t have to understand or approve.

You don’t have to be rude about it, but nor do you have to justify your decision.

4) Treat the holidays like they’re any other time of year.

Just because society has this time of year labeled “the holidays” doesn’t mean you have to think of it that way.

When it comes to the food you eat, treat the holidays like you would any other time of year.

Stick with Code Red-approved foods, drink your water, and get on the scale, same as always.

Stay true to Code Red, and Code Red will stay true to you.
