Independence Day! We celebrate with fireworks, concerts, camping trips, outdoor recreation adventures, parties, and of course…

…FOOD.

I have a saying when it comes to special events like holidays, birthday parties, and other food-centered activities:

Make it about the memories.

What I mean by that is, focus on the time you’re spending with family and friends, and the things you’re doing together…not about how much food you can ingest before you explode.

I get that it’s not easy. Society trains us, from childhood, that life revolves around food.

And food has been part of celebrations throughout human history!

But that doesn’t mean you’re “required” to gorge yourself! Especially if you’re in weight loss mode and want to get your weight off as quickly as possible.

One cheat sets you back a week. Is that junk food really worth prolonging weight loss mode by 7 whole days…to say nothing of the guilt and shame you’ll feel for caving?

I’m gonna share three simple, sound strategies my Rebels use to set themselves up for success.

It’s great if you can do it on willpower alone, but I’m all for having a plan in place to help!

1. Eat before you go. If you’re not ravenous when you show up for the festivities, you’re a lot less likely to cave.

2. Bring your own approved foods. Don’t depend on your host/hostess to have foods on hand you can eat. Bring a Code Red-approved meal or dish you know is safe to consume.

3. Sip water and chew gum. Sleep is my number one rule in weight loss. Water is number two. In addition to all the health benefits, it keeps you so full, you’ll feel a lot less like eating! Chewing sugar-free gum can help, too.

I want you waking up on the morning of July 5 feeling happy and proud of yourself, instead of sick and ashamed. You CAN do this!

This year, celebrate the Fourth of July by being good to yourself, and enjoying the quality time you’re spending with friends and family. Make it about the memories!
