It drives me crazy how medical professionals and so many gyms and trainers cling to BMI as a tool to determine your “ideal weight.”
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It’s touted as a way to determine your body fat percentage by comparing your weight with your height.
The biggest problem with BMI is that it’s a one-size-fits-all way of measuring body fat.
Take Mat Fraser, the Crossfit Games winner for 2016 and 2017.
Mat is 5’7″ and weighs about 190 pounds.
His BMI for that weight and height combination puts him almost in the OBESE category, with a body fat percentage of almost 30.
It’s bullcrap. Mat is fit as a fiddle and is solid muscle. Google him and you’ll see what I mean.
And then there’s me. I’m 5’7.5″, and I weigh 154 pounds. My BMI says my body fat percentage is almost 24%.
It’s not. I sit comfortably at 15 to 16% body fat.
See what I mean? You can have two people at the same weight and height. One could be solid muscle, and the other could be overweight, or even obese.
But their BMI puts them in the same percentage of body fat.
Plus, people come in different shapes and sizes. There are people my height who weigh 20 pounds less than I do when they’re at a healthy weight. It’s totally normal for them.
But it’s not for me. I’d be miserable and sickly at that same weight. And they would look overweight at my weight.
YOUR healthy weight is determined by a lot of factors.
BMI is not one of them. So don’t get hung up on it.
