A secret way to make weight loss feel easier

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

Making weight loss feel easier is less about what you do to lose the weight and more about your identity around your weight.

Let me show you what I mean.

Right now, go ahead and think of something you love to do.

Got something?

Good.

Now answer this question:

Does it feel like hard work to do that thing?

Notice I didn’t ask you IF it’s hard work.

I asked you if it feels like hard work.

If you’re like most people, the answer is no.

Or if it does feel like hard work, it’s a labor of love that you don’t mind doing.

Next, when you think about that thing you love doing, notice what you say about it, how you feel about it, and what you believe about it.

You say, “I love doing this!” You feel your love of doing it. You believe you love doing it.

That’s because your identity is that of someone who loves doing that thing you love doing.

When something is a part of who you believe you are, it either feels easy to do; or doing it is so fulfilling that you will eagerly push through the hard parts to get to the parts you love.

That’s true even if “the thing” is not good for you, or you don’t consciously want it, which is the case with obesity.

Meaning, if your identity around your weight is is, “I am someone with a weight problem” or “I am destined to be fat” or “I will never get this weight off” or “I am safer when I’m fat”…

Then lasting weight loss will continue to feel difficult for you, no matter which program you use to lose your weight.

Not only that, but regaining weight will continue to feel easy. Maybe not emotionally easy, but easy to DO.

What has to happen in order for weight loss to stick is this:

Your identity around your weight has to shift.

So all that inner conflict…

All that wanting to quit…

All that food noise…

Shifting your identity – who you BELIEVE you are – starts to make all that go away.

It also makes doing what it takes to lose the weight FEEL easier, just like that thing you love to do that feels easy (or you love it so much that you willingly go through the hard parts to get to the stuff you love).

Without shifting your identity, you have to rely on effort.

Can it be done?

Oh, of course!

But if you would love for it to FEEL easier, then shift your identity.

It starts with seeing and treating food as fuel instead of a way to meet emotional needs.

It’s fine to meet your emotional needs. But there are WAY healthier ways to do it than eating crap or eating too much.

For easier-feeling weight loss, shift your identity!
