64: A Big WIN For The COACH

What Is This Episode About…

In this episode, I interview Coach Rush. Despite being a coach, his weight skyrocketed. He had to get cortisol injections to his knees. His wife joined Code Red and he soon followed. He lost 70 lbs and has since competed in numerous athletic competitions. He is a better coach, husband, father, and math teacher. Listen to his amazing story from South Mississippi.

This episode is exciting for me because we get to hear from a guy. We don’t do a lot of male interviews and you better tune in to hear coach Ron’s story. Being a coach and the athletic director at his school, you’d think that he wouldn’t struggle with weight. However, his weight skyrocketed to the point where he didn’t have any energy and was sleeping all the time. He had to get cortisol injections to his knees to reduce pain.

His wife, a nurse practitioner joined Code Red and did amazing on the program This inspired Coach Rush to get started on the program. He went on to lose 70 pounds in about seven months and has kept this weight off since then. All because of real food, water, and sleep.

The weight loss has completely changed his life. He is a better coach since he has lots of energy and has gained self-confidence. He is a better teacher, a better husband, and a better father to his children. Not only this, but he has also competed in several athletic events including 3 triathlons and a half marathon, and plans to compete in an Iron Man event.

Tune in to hear of his amazing story of how he completely changed his life and how the Code Red program helped him with his weight loss.

Welcome to rebel weight loss in lifestyle. I am your host Cristy Code Red author, entrepreneur, retired professional boxer. Hello, hello to you. I’m excited about this next interview because it’s unlike any other interview I’ve ever done. Why is that? I’ve got a guy I don’t get a lot of guy interviews. I got a male, a young male, and he is a football coach and the athletic director at his school. He’s a math teacher. And he’s from South Mississippi, and his wife who’s a nurse practitioner started on Code Red, and then ended up kind of getting him started like you know, she inspired coach rush and then coach rush started on Code Red and lost 70 pounds. It has completely changed his life. It has changed his marriage. It has changed his relationship with his kids. It has changed the way he coaches the way he teaches every single aspect of his life has been completely turned around. And it’s all because of real food, water, and sleep and I’m so excited for you to hear not only his accent, which is a lot of fun to listen to, but he’s just such a cool dude a humble, cool dude who was taught wrong he was taught wrong about food and about the way you address health and the way you tackle your weight problem. It was all wrong. Just like most of us were taught wrong, but now he has completely turned his life around. I’m excited to bring you coach rush for rebel weight loss in lifestyle. Enjoy this interview. Thank you guys.

Intro  1:31

I’m Cristy Code Red and you’re listening to rebel weight loss and lifestyle where we believe food holds the power to heal or poisoned and we believe our society has been misled regarding proper nutrition and weight loss. You’re in the right place if you’re looking for some straight up truth, because I’m here to shed light on the lies and brainwashing that has taken place over the past five decades. Thanks so much for listening.

Cristy  1:57

Welcome, welcome you guys. Cristy Code Red author, entrepreneur, retired professional boxer, it’s kind of hard to, it’s kind of hard to show you a little visual sitting down. How is everybody doing? I’m not gonna even waste any time jumping into this guy’s I want to introduce you to somebody who is so different from our normal guests. We don’t normally have the honor and the pleasure of speaking to an athletic director speaking to a coach, and this coach, Coach rush, thank you so much for being on here. We are all so excited because guys, he has quite a story. And I told him when I we first got on here, I said, Don’t tell me anything. I want to hear it for the first time. And this is quite a remarkable story. So thank you, coach, for being on here with us today.

Ron Rushing  2:46

Thank you for having me. Excited.

Cristy  2:48

Well, I’m excited. I’m going to get you started right off. I am dying to hear talk to us first. paint a picture for us about maybe tell us a little bit about yourself so we can kind of get an idea what you do but you Tell us what life was like before your wife got started because your wife was the one that started this whole code red thing and you followed suit. But your life has changed. So take us back, paint us a picture. Tell us what happened with you before you came on to code red.

Ron Rushing  3:13

Okay, this is pretty much two years ago. First of all, I’m a high school football coach. I teach high school math and I’ve done that for 23 years. I was a college athlete, I play college baseball was always pretty in shape. But, you know, as a coach, there’s a lot of late nights like concession stands, you know, your meals are at different times of the day and over those years, I’ve just put on a lot of weight. The season before I started Code Red. I was having to get injections in my knees. My knees were hurting. I got one of my shoulder I’d gotten up to about 245 pounds and was just miserable. slept all the time didn’t have energy. And um, during that season, my wife actually her sister. They both signed up on the Is it the takedown challenge to 10 pounds and on She started it and I’ve got a picture I wish I could show it to you but she did amazing on it and throughout the season I didn’t do it during the season because I was pretty bad shape and there’s a lot of stuff going on and she just transform she started losing weight. She started at 212 pounds. And her goal was around 165 and she actually got down to 150 pounds. She lost it she’s holding around 158 pounds right now. But over this she’s just doing amazing and really inspire me to jump on board and as soon as the season was over with I started the cruise to Korea, you know that the program and since then this completely changed my life. I have so much energy. I actually got down to around 70 pounds. I’m holding it about 65 right now. I started 245 and 185 right now we got back in the weight room best shape I’ve ever been in my life. And it just totally transformed me. My players laugh they they say we like the old Trump, I don’t want to the new coach Ron. So they’ve kind of got a new energetic coach.

Cristy  5:06

Wow. So this is pretty remarkable because being an athletic coach, you were taught certain things, and maybe certain things apply when you’re dealing with kids, but not dealing with people our age coach. I mean, you know, they just don’t it just doesn’t work. Right. We can pretty much get away with anything when we’re 17 18 19 20 years old, you know, but the things that you learn in school, boy, did it totally contradict what you only

Ron Rushing  5:29

different. Yep. I’m sorry to interrupt you. But Oh, she started me off on your first podcast. She said, if you’re gonna do this, you got to listen to the first three podcasts and I never listened to a podcast. And I got on there and just listened to you. You know, over the years, we’ve done a lot of different things and tried different things and maybe I would do it she wouldn’t we lose 20 pounds over month and a half we gained 30 and just back and forth, but after listening to you and then you’re just straight to the point, you know, and listening to this science behind it and the reason and everything just got me really energized and excited about it and all that’s really what started it was this first first three podcasts got me going.

Cristy  6:10

So that’s I love that show. When you were a good 70 pounds overweight did your doctor or any kind of medical professional ever say to you listen, this isn’t looking too good you got to take care of this weight problem.

Ron Rushing  6:23

I’d go in for my yearly checkups, you know, obviously they’re told man they lose weight. And of course I would like I said I’d jump on something lose 15 20 pounds in a month and a half and gained 25 30 back. Nothing ever sustained. They were all torturous that I can say really mean you got to follow the guidelines. It is what it is. But it hasn’t been that difficult for me. I’ve really enjoyed doing it. I do it’s second nature. Now. I don’t think about anything and now I did go It was a complete one ad for me because while I was coaching and when I was on the bad side, I would say I would drink 10 to 12 that cokes a day would drink a two liter diet coke at night watching film stay in what? A lot of sleep. But it was a complete one ad. I put the Diet Coke down cold turkey. I haven’t drank at one and a half. Just got on the guidelines and follow your directions and it’s just gone. Well,

Cristy  7:13

what is the biggest thing that you’ve noticed like the way you feel I know the weight loss but a lot of people say the weight is down here compared to how I feel

Ron Rushing  7:21

a lot of self confidence. So I feel really good about myself, you know, just a lot of energy, love getting around. The key is I’ll go out run around with them and do different things and try to encourage the people who are active and what they do, but it’s just it’s man. Every positive thing you can say is just completely turned around 180 degrees.

Cristy  7:41

Now your wife had sent me a picture on Instagram. It’s been a long time ago and she’s, I think it was she sent it I don’t think you sent it. I think she sent it because I went oh my gosh, and she’s one that kind of told me about what was going on with you. But it was a picture of you on the field, you know, a coaching a ball game, a football game, and then it was before picture and it was a After picture and you don’t even look like the same person you look spelt, and just ripped i mean is that I put my eyeballs almost bugged out of my head.

Ron Rushing  8:09

It was a big change. And I put that on some social media got a lot of comments about it, a friend of mine, who’s the sports editor of the newspaper, just kind of did it out of the blue and sent to me. And when, you know, I’d never I didn’t take before pictures, you know, and things like that. I wish I would have my own but looking at those two pictures, that’s when it kind of hit me kind of slapped me and said, Man, I really changed. And of course, I knew I was feeling better. I had a lot of energy, but just being able to see I wish I would have taken pictures being able to see the before and after side by side has really made you feel good.

Cristy  8:41

So you used to drink a lot of Diet Coke, which is just rotting you from the inside out. I know I’m a former Diet Coke addict myself. And I know I mean addicts through and through. I can’t touch this stuff now. So what other stuff did you use to eat and drink that you’ve let go of that habit?

Ron Rushing  8:57

Everything. Lots of bread. Sugar and everything. A lot of the stuff like I said, would be at a game and I grabbed something from the concession stand nachos, just unhealthy things like that. really not a lot of healthy stuff for you everything I ate looking at what a nail was, was bad for me, probably what the general person eats every day, you know, for the most part.

Cristy  9:16

And so now when you go to the concession stand, what would be an example of what you’d get.

Ron Rushing  9:21

I don’t go to the concession stand. I’ve kind of you know, we got down and prepared our sales. So I know if I’ve got a game away. You know, first of all, I only know I’m comfortably without trying to eat twice a day. But if I’m going somewhere, I’ll take something with me. You know, the just a lot of it is being prepared. Know where you’re gonna be when you need to eat something, what you’re gonna eat and just kind of thinking ahead throughout the day. I’ve got good at doing that. So we wouldn’t venture over to the concession stand and that’s what’s good about the water.

Cristy  9:47

Yeah, that’s totally true. You have increased confidence. You have increased energy. Did you go back for your physical to your medical provider and what did he or she say?

Unknown Speaker  9:57

When a couple months ago when they were absolutely amazed, he asked me what I did. I told him I tell everybody about the Cristy Code Red. And, you know, I try to get them to listen to the podcast, get on there get the information, but they actually sat there for about 15 minutes and listen to my story and was amazed about what happened.

Cristy  10:15

Well, it’s so striking You know, when when you see before and like you said, I wish I would have had everybody says that about their before and after pictures, they just wish they would have, they would have but nobody wants to take pictures. So do you have any children of your own?

Ron Rushing  10:28

I have three children, and I’ve got a 17 year old it’ll be a senior this upcoming year plays football for me, but my summer, I’ve got um, whoever Oh, they’ll be 13 next month, boy. And then I’ve got a 10 year old girl.

Cristy  10:41

So how has this affected your relationship with them? Are they are they making different choices? Are you guys interacting more because you know, when you feel better, you don’t feel like sleeping? You know taking naps and going to you know, that kind of thing.

Ron Rushing  10:52

Right? We’re young. I coached them during the summer month. I coached my oldest when he was 12 and I started coaching my middle son. He was 12 I’ve actually let him go and I’m coaching my daughter but we go outside a lot throw the baseball go to the field and hit and do different things like that. So a lot more energy to go outside and we all get outside and do yard work together and different things like that. So really our family just know whether it’s going fishing or getting out and doing different things. It’s really been good and like I said, my wife you know same with her she’s got energy and looks amazing and she just kind of re energizes You know, we’ve been married going on 20 years this year. And um, but the last two three just so premiered, you know, just it’s helped everything you can make a list of pros and make a list of cons and this all the pros.

Cristy  11:41

And yeah, I haven’t heard talked about iron sharpens iron. I mean having her having you guys together and saying no, I’m not going to bring I’m not going to make the hamburger helper lasagna. You know that she’s in you’re backing her up and she’s backing you up you guys. I’m sure the relationship just with the mood swings not being there anymore.

Ron Rushing  12:00

Absolutely, we’re on the same page. And like you said, when we first started, or senior, everything I could eat, and I didn’t, I had to learn that as we go. But when I would go to grab something, she’d kind of look at me. Of course, I know the boots, I would put it down and she was very supportive starting off and she, you know, I wouldn’t be if she wouldn’t have started the diet, then then I wouldn’t start it with that. So doing what she did jump started me and this is just, it’s been good.

Cristy  12:25

That’s incredible. So the biggest shocker of this whole thing, what is it been for you?

Ron Rushing  12:31

As far as after the weight loss or

Cristy  12:33

the burn? Yeah, just the weight loss or our how mentally or what people say I mean, people are usually shocked by something like I can’t believe blank.

Unknown Speaker  12:42

Anybody I see that I haven’t seen in a while, you know, ask and you kind of get used to tell the same story over and over but but I have to explain that a lot, which makes you feel good when people come up to you and is just I’m a totally different person, you know, and I owe it to you. If it wasn’t for your program. I wouldn’t be where I’m at. I don’t understand how people wouldn’t do the program. you know, I know some people may have doubts don’t work and that work. I can promise you that it does. But you know, and I like how simple it is to do these things, you know. And when we first started, we would say, Well, you know, maybe we can do it a little bit more extreme, you know, but you don’t have to just follow the guidelines as you see it. Just following those. I’m a totally different person. I’ve got energy. I’m in the weight room. Now. Last two, three months, I’ve gotten there lifting some heavy weights. I’ve actually ran three triathlons after I lost weight. The last one was an Olympic sized one. And I ran the half marathon down in New Orleans, it’s the first of February So that’s some stuff that I’ve never done in my life. And I’m just feeling better about myself and feeling good is kind of pushing me to do all those things. My goal was in the next couple of years ago full Iron Man So okay, I’ll get to that point.

Cristy  13:53

Oh my gosh. You know, in this country coach we have a we don’t have a weight loss problem. We have a weight regain problem. And you are a perfect example of somebody who did lose the weight, but you’ve kept it off this whole time,

Unknown Speaker  14:06

right? without any problems, you know, probably took me, I’ve done it, maybe a little over a year and a half, you know, I lost the majority of mine pretty early, six months, seven months. And from that point, you know, I know you say you can add different things, you know, kind of once you hit the maintenance stage, we may do a thing, but pretty much we don’t do anything different. We just kind of do what the rules are, we might eat a little more what we usually do, but it’s not been very hard at all. I know, I might have done one certain diet and lost 25 pounds before, but you can’t sustain those and then beyond the weight comes back home. This is so so easy to do. And it’s so easy to maintain once you get through. That’s the difference to me about the whole diet is this sustainable when you get through.

Cristy  14:49

And now your whole family is different. I mean, it’s completely transformed. You guys probably look at vacations, different trips, different, everything’s different from snacking in the car to to not worrying about where we’re going to eat. Next,

Unknown Speaker  15:01

we do the job. Most of us are on it not not all, my 17 year old will or hidden sometimes, but for the most part, our younger kids are going to eat Anyway, you know, so they do a lot better job on it than he does.

Cristy  15:14

Is it frustrating to you because I have tried to get into schools and come speak to schools. And a lot of schools don’t want me to come because I speak out against the very companies that subsidize them, which are, you know, the the soda and the juice companies? Is that frustrating for you to see what the kids are eating and drinking nowadays, the things that we’re letting them do,

Ron Rushing  15:32

you know, I’ll work at a great school. It’s a good Christian school, and I go in the cafeteria and shake my head. Sometimes we’re feeding the kids and all the teachers are at a table and I’m like, you know, why are we feeding our kids? This is exactly like you say it, you know, we give a health a health club every morning and do different things like that. And when you go in the cafeteria, there’s nothing really in there that they should be eating. You know, we do have a salad bar, and a couple things like that. But for the most part, we don’t feed them things that we need to be feeding.

Cristy  15:59

Yeah. Good. Well, if you ever can get me into your school and speak I love speaking of schools, it’s just like, Oh, hey, Mike. Oh, I love it. I love kids because I think if I can, if I can get through to a kid, you know, if I can say that one thing the penny drops in, and then they, then they don’t have to come see me in 10 years, or, you know, be in the same boat that you and I have been in having a battle or waited and later in a later in life, so we got a lot of men watching, we’ve got a lot of younger guys watching like you that, you know, what would you say to them? If they would say I just a meat potatoes kind of guy.

Ron Rushing  16:35

I was too. I was the same thing. You know, when it gets down to this. I think personally, you know, I was at the point in my life where I was miserable. My body hurt, you know, if you’re at that point, you know, you need to do it because it’s a life changer. It’s definitely worth it. I think it’s for everybody you know, that wants to lose weight. But the people who are at the point where they need to lose weight and make a life change. This is the only program that I would ever By

Cristy  17:02

and being a teacher, I mean, your job is so difficult. You’re there early or they’re late because of coaching. I mean, it never ends. There’s never a break for you. So you need all the energy you can get.

Ron Rushing  17:13

Yes, yes, yes. And you know, this past football season was amazing. I had all the energy that I needed I’m running around bouncing on sideline practice all day long. So just from the previous season where I was taking injections and my knees because my knees were hurting so bad that this past season was just far in between the difference

Cristy  17:31

so no more injections where you want any other kind of medications any kind of steroids anything at all.

Unknown Speaker  17:37

I’ve been in pretty good health as far as I have. My cholesterol has always been pretty good. Just the way that I felt, you know, no energy sloppy, was catch myself sleeping all the time. You know, I guess a lot of that was because I wasn’t home but it’s just been a complete 180
