Why isn’t willpower enough?

You can lose weight doing just about anything. But keeping it off is a whole other beast.

One trick (of many) I share in my book, The Code Red Revolution, is to never, ever keep junk food in your house.

You see, willpower isn’t enough for most people.

True, it’s important, and some people can do it on sheer will alone…if they want something badly enough.

But when you’re first trying to change your eating (or implement any new and improved habit), most people need more than plain ol’ willpower.

Each of us wakes up every day with only a finite amount of willpower.

And life saps it out of us at every turn.

A fight with your spouse. Screaming kids. A rude driver. Annoying co-workers. Grumpy customers. The bills piling up. The house needing cleaned. The dog tracking mud all over.

It’s one thing after another.

And then the cupcakes on the counter start calling your name. You can smell them. You can already taste the sweet, rich, melt-in-your mouth frosting.

Of course you’ll try to resist. And for a while, you’ll be successful. You’ll walk by the things 50 times without caving in.

But the fifty-first time you walk by? You’ll pick one up and lick the frosting.

Willpower works to a point. And I’m all for taking responsibility for your actions; and for making your mind up that you’re not gonna eat bullcrap food.

But why torment yourself with temptation in the first place? It’s like an alcoholic keeping alcohol in the house.

Throw that bullcrap food in the garbage. Give it away. Donate it to a food pantry.

Whatever you gotta do to protect yourself from temptation.

It’s SO much easier than relying on willpower alone.
