Our stomachs are pretty amazing organs.

Inside, they contain hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. The hydrochloric acid is SO concentrated, if you drop a piece of wood in it, the acid would eat right through it. (I’m not recommending that you do this!)

Our stomach acid is potent for a reason! Its job is to completely break our food down so our bodies can utilize it to fuel the many, many complex systems we have going inside us 24/7.

That means it’s crucial our stomachs function properly and fully digest our food.

I don’t know about you, but growing up, I remember hearing “nutrition guidelines” that insisted it was important to consume a beverage with every meal.

“Have a bite of food, then a sip of water.”

The problem with drinking anything while you’re eating is that the liquid dilutes your stomach acid and interferes with digestion.

Digestion actually starts while you’re chewing your food, by working the saliva into it, to start breaking it down.

Guzzling a beverage also washes away all the saliva, further impeding digestion.

Fortunately, the solution to this dilemma is super simple:

Pause in your beverage consumption a few minutes before you eat, and don’t drink anything during the meal. If your food is dry, a few sips here and there aren’t the end of the world.

But whenever possible, leave your meal itself beverage free. And chew your food thoroughly!

To be clear: Water is excellent for digestion – just not during the meal.
