When you lose weight and get healthy, sooner or later you’re gonna get compliments.
But I’ve noticed that a staggering number of people don’t know how to take a compliment…especially people trying to lose weight!
Here’s what I mean.
Friend: “Wow, have you lost weight? You look amazing!“
You: “Thanks. But I still have a long ways to go.”
Some people think they’re being “humble” by throwing on that last part.
Not me. Here’s what I see.
First, you’re poo-pooing on the person who complimented you.
They made a conscious effort to acknowledge your hard work at losing weight.
By throwing on the “but…” part, you’re negating the compliment, and then throwing it back in their face.
Who cares if you have more weight to lose? The fact you’ve lost enough for others to notice and pay you a compliment is amazing! They’re clearly impressed!
Second, negating the compliment with the “but…” comment is also you poo-pooing on yourself.
You’ve put in a lot of time and hard work–and made a lot of sacrifices–to lose your weight.
You’ve skipped the wine. You’ve stood up to nagging friends who insist you “deserve” a cheat. You’ve walked by that plate of donuts at work, over and over.
The fact you’re not at goal weight doesn’t negate all those amazing moments you stayed Rebel Strong…or all the weight you’ve lost and non-scale victories you’ve experienced.
So, here’s what I want you to do.
The next time someone pays you a compliment, say “Thank you so much!”
And leave it at that.
