“Wow, your dog is so well-behaved! I wish my dog was like yours.”
I hear some version of that almost every time I take Hazel out in public.
The person who says it usually goes on to tell me all the rotten things their dog does, including what it would be doing if it were out in public like Hazel.
What people who say this to me don’t realize is that Hazel isn’t well-behaved by accident.
I train her every single day, and I have for a whole year (and counting).
She’s gonna be with me a long time, and I want that time to be as safe and enjoyable for us both as possible.
That ain’t gonna happen if I refuse to train her.
That’s not to say I don’t get frustrated sometimes when she’s not getting it. We definitely have more work to do!
Even so, she’s come SUCH a long way…BECAUSE I consistently train her.
When it comes to the thoughts you think, your mind works the same way.
Meaning, unless you train it to think the thoughts that’ll actually HELP you get what you want, it’ll think thoughts that get you what you DON’T want.
Seriously, see if you’ve had any of these thoughts about your weight loss journey:
“I just wanna lose weight without feeling deprived.”
“I am destined to be fat.”
“I’ll never get this weight off.”
“I’m scared I won’t be able to keep my weight off.”
“Why can’t I get back on track?”
Do you see what all those thoughts have in common?
They’re all focused on what you DON’T want…like staying off track, feeling deprived, staying fat, and not keeping your weight off.
See, your mind has a way of showing you more of what you focus on.
It’s just like the “new car syndrome.” You get a new car (new to you) and start seeing that same make and model everywhere…
Because what you focus on, you get. Your brain figures it must be important to you because you’re always thinking about it, so it shows it to you more and more.
So if you’re focused on what you’re scared of and don’t want, guess what you get more of?
If you’re tired of getting results you don’t want, point your mind toward what you DO want, by focusing on that.
Do it consistently, because your mind is probably trained (by accident) to mostly focus on what you don’t want.
Get your mind on your side by intentionally focusing on what you DO want, and it’ll get the hint and start showing you/giving you more of that!
