Who invented the bullcrap “rule” we just “forget everything” that’s good for us during the holidays?
Sleeping around, snorting cocaine, abusing food and alcohol just because it’s “the holidays?”
Calories suddenly don’t count because “it’s the holidays???”
These are just a few examples of the ways you’ve been programmed to fail at weight loss.
You’ve been programmed to destroy yourself with food and alcohol, and call it “celebrating.”
You’ve been programmed to destroy yourself with food and alcohol, and call it “freedom.”
You’ve been programmed to destroy yourself with food and alcohol, and call it “quality time,” or worse, “love.” Food is FUEL.
There’s a lot more than three ways you’ve been programmed to fail at weight loss, but in this post, I’m focusing on the top three ways I’ve encountered most in my 26 years in this industry.
First up: The diet mentality.
The diet mentality has a lot of super negative aspects, like training you to see food as “good” or “bad.”
But the worst part by far is the way it programs you to think you can make a temporary change to lose the weight, then go back to what you did to get fat and sick, and expect to keep the weight off.
Logically it makes ZERO sense. Yet you’ve probably done it a million times, probably without even thinking about it. Then you wonder why you “can’t get the weight off.” You’ve been programmed not to think about THAT part.
Saying you can change to lose the weight, then go back to what you were doing that got you fat and sick, is like saying you can pick up a knife, make a cut on your forearm that bleeds, wait for it to heal, then cut that same spot again and expect it not to bleed.
Or, it’s like saying you can drive your car over a spike strip that destroys the tires, get new tires put on, drive over the spike strip again, and expect it not to destroy your tires again.
You cannot return to doing what causes a problem, and expect the problem not to become a problem again.
Second: Using food for ANYTHING other than fuel.
Boy are we in a mess with this one.
We use food to celebrate, to reward, to punish, to control, to cope with our emotions, to bond with others, and we even call it “love.”
Most people have an incredibly dysfunctional relationship with food. If food were a person, it would probably want nothing to do with any of us.
In a way, I get why most people act this way with their food. I’ve done it, too. Next to making love, eating is the most intimate thing you do with your body.
You’d think that would be enough for us to use food as fuel, and eat healthfully. But for the majority of people, it’s not.
Food is not a substitute for love – for any emotion – and it sure as heck isn’t a coping mechanism. It’s fuel.
Yes, of course you can enjoy what you eat. But work on eating with the intention of nourishing your body, not for the other dysfunctional reasons we use food.
Third: The quick fix mindset.
Getting a result is one thing. Keeping it is another. Part of that is because the quick fix mindset is out of control in today’s world.
And hey, I really appreciate the innovations humanity has developed to make our lives safer and easier. But in a lot of ways, it’s backfiring.
We’ve gotten SO lazy. We’ll cartwheel from quick fix to quick fix instead of just doing the work to get and keep the result.
Meanwhile, if you’d pick something and stick with it, you’d already have the result you want in a lot of areas of your life.
The Code Red Lifestyle™ is an amazing, sustainable way of life that is proven to get and keep the weight off…when you follow it, and do so consistently (including through the speed bumps of life).
It works better and faster than anything else I’ve ever seen that is also SAFE and SUSTAINABLE.
