Surviving Spring Break

Spring break. Like SO many events, it revolves around partying with food and alcohol.

When your plan is to stay strong instead of gorge on 10 pounds’ worth of free food, thoughts of “getting through” spring break’s food-centric festivities may rattle you.

We both know foods don’t levitate from serving trays and cram themselves down your throat.

But having some actionable advice to implement is reassuring, and can help you stay on the straight and narrow.

So here’s three things you can do to enjoy spring break without inhaling 10 pounds’ worth of food:

1) Eat before you go. If you’re headed to a party or similar event, fill up on Code Red-approved foods before you leave. If you’re not ravenous when you show up at the party, you’re a LOT less likely to pig out.

2) Chew gum. Keep a whole pack around to chew through the event, if that’s what it takes! Pick something minty. Peppermint, wintergreen, or spearmint are less likely to trigger cravings than something fruity, such as watermelon or strawberry.

3) Sip water. Bring a water bottle to fill and keep with you. Or, if you prefer, fill a glass with water once you’re there and use that. Sip on it every few minutes throughout the event. When people see you with a beverage, they’re less likely to hassle you about booze and food.

BONUS TIP: Make it about the memories. There’s no law that says enjoying life has to revolve around shoving food in your pie-hole.

Just because it’s what we “always do” doesn’t mean that’s the way it has to be.

I know it’s a paradigm shift to imagine doing anything at all without obsessing over when and where you’ll next eat.

But it’s SO freeing! Mental energy, time, even money – you’ll have more of all three when you focus on experiences and people rather than eating food.

Twenty years from now, are people going to care–or even remember–whether you ate a piece of cake?

Or are they going to remember how you laughed with them, cried with them, and shared part of your life with them?

You don’t need food for any of that.

Focus on experiencing spring break, instead of on pigging out every chance you get.

You’ll get to wake up in the morning filled with pride, instead of hung over, sick, and ashamed of yourself.

Who wants that? You deserve better!
