My mom brought my sisters and me up to look our best using whatever clothes, shoes, and jewelry we had on hand.

(Yes, that’s Mom and me in the photo above.)

But she always made it clear that, whatever we were wearing, we needed to own it.

It’s like that saying: You wear the clothes. They don’t wear you.

And Mom didn’t want our clothes wearing us, ever, whether they were super fancy or not.

When I was a kid, they often were not.

That’s because we were pretty poor when I growing up, so most of my clothes were hand me downs from my older sister, or relatives. (Although sometimes my relatives shared some nice pieces!)

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, when fashion was total crap, so it was impossible to mess it up.

But even so, Mom taught me that when I put an outfit together, complete with jewelry and shoes, I should act like I’d done it that way on purpose, even if I’d only used what I had available. So that’s exactly what I did.

Of all the amazing advice Mom gave us girls about fashion, there’s one piece of advice that’s my very favorite, and it’s this:

“Sis, the most stylish thing you can wear is confidence.”

Isn’t that fantastic? And it’s so true!

Confidence isn’t about how you look. It’s about how you feel.

I know – feeling confident can be easier said than done, right?

Now, I don’t believe anyone should have to lose weight, be a certain size, or look a certain way to feel confident. That’s shame talking, and I can’t stand it.

What I do believe is that if you want to be more confident, but the way you feel about how you look is standing in the way, why not do something about it?

For a lot of my Code Red Rebels, losing weight helps them feel better about their appearance, which leads to them feeling better about themselves. And that leads to feeling confident.

Confidence is like a muscle. The more you work it, the bigger it gets!

Feeling good about your appearance can be a way you work your confidence muscle.
