Does sustainable weight loss without gimmicks have to be complicated?

Recently, I met with a lady who’s the editor of two statewide Idaho magazines. (In September of 2024 I’ll be featured in one of them!)

She’s a fascinating woman: In her 70s, very creative and artsy, a filmmaker (she’s made twenty-one films), and she started one of her magazines just five years ago and already has three offers from people who want to buy it.

At one point while we were chatting over coffee, she asked me, “What do you want?”

“I wanna spread the message of hope and healing through real food, water, and sleep,” I replied.

“What do you REALLY want?” she asked again. “In your heart of hearts?”

I stared at her for a moment, wondering if I’d missed something. Is this a trick question?

Then, since my first answer didn’t seem to land, I tried again.

“In my heart of hearts, I REALLY want every single person on the planet to hear that they have an option of choosing real food, water, and sleep…that they don’t have to go with shakes, pills, diet foods, or exercise…that they don’t have to take a shot, or have surgery, or do anything drastic in order to lose weight. Even if you have 200-plus pounds to lose, you can do it with real food, water, and sleep. I want every single person on the planet to hear that message…so that whatever happens to me, every single man, woman, and child on this planet knows they have real food, water, and sleep as an option. That’s my purpose, that’s my calling, that’s what I wanna spend my days doing.”

I don’t know what she was expecting me to say. That I secretly want to be a painter or artist? De-worm orphans in Somalia? Rescue elephants in Thailand? (Nothing wrong with those…)

I can’t say for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she expected some drastic, dramatic, overly complicated answer, where I’d start weeping and wailing in the middle of the coffee shop.

Instead, she got, “I wanna spread the message of hope and healing through real food, water, and sleep.”

😂

It reminded me that people, in general, tend to overcomplicate things that aren’t complicated, including weight loss.

Weight loss CAN be simple.

Case in point:

Eat real food.
Drink water.
Sleep.
Follow 10 simple rules.

It’s not necessarily easy (because that’s when you get into the realm of unsustainable gimmicks), but simple?

Absolutely.

And when you buckle down and follow the program, it can take less time than you think.
