Always ravenous when trying to lose weight with high-carb/low-fat? Here’s why.

In Code Red’s maintenance program, I encourage maintenance Rebels – as part of the maintenance roadmap – to experiment with food and further hone in on what works for them.

Over the years, some have experimented with high-carb, low-fat eating.

And without fail, they tell me that they feel hungry a LOT more often than they do on Code Red.

(That’s especially true if they also play around with eating in a caloric deficit while eating high-carb/low-fat!)

It’s no wonder that people who promote eating high-carb/low-fat eating for weight loss have to eat four to six times a day. Otherwise, they’d kill somebody from being so “hangry” all the time!

So why, exactly, does high-carb/low-fat eating leave you feeling more hungry and less satisfied so soon after you eat?

It’s largely because carbs are an easy source of energy for your body.

They tend to be faster and easier to digest and get converted to energy (in the form of glucose) more easily.

(What goes up must come down, so while the energy spike is sooner and higher, it also comes down sooner and faster.)

Because of that, your body processes carbs faster, which means it’s ready for more fuel sooner. It sends hunger signals to let you know…

Which translates to you feeling hungrier more often.

In Code Red weight loss mode, we prioritize healthy dietary fat instead of carbs as the energy source for your body.

Both carbs (glucose) and fat (ketones) are sources of fuel you’re body’s designed to use.

But fat takes longer to digest and is a longer-lasting, more stable fuel source.

For that reason, when you include more healthy fat in your diet instead of more carbs, you feel satisfied longer (to the point you usually won’t want to snack). Plus, you get consistent, stable energy instead of the crazy highs and lows.

Best of all, you don’t have that CONSTANT undercurrent of hunger the way you do with high-carb/low-fat.

To be clear, some hunger between meals is normal. Feeling stuffed 24/7 isn’t great for your health or digestion.

But if you have weight to lose, it’s pretty distracting to have a near-constant hum of ravenous “FEED ME NOW” hunger clawing at your gut all freaking day.

Fear of hunger is one of the top reasons most people hesitate to try and get rid of extra fat.

But with Code Red, you don’t have to feel ravenous to safely and sustainably lose weight.
