
Hazel and I went to Salt Lake City again recently.
While we were waiting at the airport, an airport employee pointed to Hazel and asked: “Does she pick up your computer?”
“Does she what?” I asked.
“Pick up your computer,” the lady repeated.
“You mean…if I drop it?” I clarified, confused.
“Yes.”
“Meaning, will she pick up my computer off the floor?”
“Yes.”
“With her teeth?”
“Yes.”
I just blinked at her for a moment, still not sure I was understanding why my DOG would pick up my COMPUTER with her TEETH if I dropped it.
“I’m hearing impaired, so that’s not the sort of assistance she gives me,” I finally replied.
Hazel is a service dog, and one of her jobs is to alert me to important sounds I might miss due to being hearing impaired.
But I’ve never heard of a service dog trained to pick up your computer if you drop it.
😂
I guess it’s not impossible…but the possibility was so far off MY radar that when this lady asked me, it just didn’t click.
Her unusual question reminded me that everyone has their own unique filter of the world…what they see, hear, feel, what they believe…
And sometimes, their filter just does NOT mesh with yours.
It’s also true that your filter of the world doesn’t always mesh with results you’re trying to get in your life, like losing the weight and keeping it off.
How you view food, how you think about yourself, how you manage stress, what you believe…your filter can even make it so you know EXACTLY what to do to get the weight off, yet still not be able to do it.
It feels like your mind is playing tricks on you…and maybe you even feel like your own worst enemy.
If that’s the case, please know it’s COMPLETELY normal. We’ve all felt that way so many times we couldn’t even count them.
