After 30+ years of helping people lose weight, I’ve seen what makes weight loss stick and what all but guarantees weight regain.
In this post, I’m sharing three secrets to LASTING weight loss.
Secret #1: Lose weight eating food you actually like.
It may not get to be as much of those foods as you’re used to, or every single food you like, while you’re dropping weight.
But it can and should include foods you enjoy, and here’s why:
If you have to gag down your meals because the food you’re eating is so disgusting, how likely is it you’re going to stick with it long-term?
Probably not very likely.
Find a way to eat that lets you eat things you enjoy eating while also dropping weight.
Secret #2: Have a plan for what you’ll do when you hit your goal weight.
Most people never think about this part.
They focus on getting the weight off, but not what happens once it’s off.
You’ve probably lost weight at some point in your life, only to gain some, or even all, of it back.
If you want to stop repeating that cycle, you need a plan for what you’ll do after you finish losing weight.
If you go back to what you were doing before, you’ll gain it back.
The weight doesn’t just magically stay off – you have to make permanent adjustments to how and how much you eat in order to get it to stay off.
No, that doesn’t mean you “can’t” eat whatever you want.
It DOES mean that if you revert to eating how and how much you ate when you were fat, you’ll regain the weight.
If you don’t want that to happen, have a plan for HOW you’ll keep the weight off.
Secret #3: Shift your identity.
Most people with a weight problem see themselves as someone with a weight problem.
Because of that, the easiest thing to do is think and act like someone with a weight problem…which makes it tough to think and act like someone who gets the weight off and comfortably stays at a healthy weight.
If you don’t change how you see yourself – aka shift your identity – the “I have a weight problem” tape will be playing in your unconscious all the time, so getting and keeping the weight off will feel like hard work because it’s in direct conflict with that tape. Even getting to goal weight doesn’t usually change what the tape is playing.
You’ve GOT to change the tape from “I’m someone with a weight problem” to “I’m someone who comfortably stays at a healthy weight.”
When that becomes how you truly see yourself, the DOING part that gets you there starts feeling easier, because it lines up with your inner “tape.”
Lasting weight loss is 100% possible.
AND, if you want to lose weight in a way that actually STICKS, you can’t keep doing the same old things that aren’t working.
Use the tips in this post to help you make this the last time you have to lose weight.
