You could be wasting money on supplements (here’s how to know)

I’m the Maid of Honor at a friend’s wedding this summer, and it’s a big deal. Entertainment Weekly, Entertainment Tonight, NBC, and other media outlets will be there.

I want to look my best without wearing a wig (too hot), which means a new cut and color for my hair.

Problem is, my Utah stylist (who’s really good) wasn’t available in time, so I called a local place I started going to back in 2009, when I first moved to Boise.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Cristy, but she moved to New York City!” the receptionist told me when I asked for my usual stylist.

“New York City! You’re kidding!” I exclaimed.

“Listen, we have your whole history,” the receptionist assured me. “Everything you’ve ever done with us. Maybe I can get you in with someone else.”

“My hair’s not difficult. I need it cut and I need it colored. I’m gonna be in a wedding, and I need it done right.”

“Let me set you up with Caroline. She’s been doing hair for 29 years. She owned her own salon up until last year, and she’s really good. I think you’re going to love her.”

“Okay, great.”

When I showed up for my appointment with Caroline, I told her what I needed:

– My gray covered up (by coloring my hair my natural dark brown)

– The length evened out into a cute bob (my hair was all different lengths from growing out my mohawk)

– Some highlights

Caroline got to work, but as she did, she kept offering me these additional services, and each one added a few more bucks to her base fee.

“For $25 more, we can do a treatment that strengthens the bonds of your hair,” she said at one point.

“I’m sorry, strengthen the bonds of my hair?”

“We want to make sure your hair doesn’t break off,” she explained. “It was only ten months ago that you bleached it last, and we don’t want any breakage, and the bond will protect it from breaking.”

“So you mean to tell me that if I don’t pay this $25, my hair is gonna break off and end up in the sink and go down the drain, and I will have bald spots?” I clarified.

I really made her explain herself each time she suggested something.

“We just don’t know the integrity of your hair, so we might as well be safe and do this treatment on it,” she kept saying.

I said yes to some of her suggestions (though not all).

It jacked her fee up pretty high.

But you know what?

My hair turned out EXACTLY how I wanted it to.

It was soft as a baby’s behind, the color was absolutely perfect, and the cut was great. She 100% nailed it.

“This is what twenty-nine years as a hair stylist will get you. It will get you exactly what you want,” she told me after I said I liked it.

Bottom line: I ended up paying a lot more than I typically would for a cut and color.

But I also got EXACTLY what I wanted.

On the drive to my cabin that night, I got to thinking…

It’s easy to judge everything by price and label something as “too expensive.”

But is it really “too expensive” if it gets you EXACTLY what you want (and especially, gets it for you faster, easier, and/or better than you could ever get it on your own)?

Sometimes, it really does pay to pay more to get exactly what you want, vs. waste time AND money trying to save time and money and STILL not have what you want.

This ABSOLUTELY applies to supplements.

You can “save money” on the crap supplements at Walmart or Walgreens that are made out of horse urine or rocks…and then pee 70% of it out because it’s not bioavailable…while also ingesting inflammatory fillers…all while NOT getting the results you were hoping for.

Or, you can invest more in good quality supplements.

And especially, you do your research and find out whether you actually NEED a supplement you’re thinking of taking.

A lot of people take supplements willy nilly without thinking through what they’re taking or why they’re taking.

By getting high-quality, absorbable supplements and choosing supplements to address your most pressing problems, you can get the most bang for your buck.
