Some thoughts and ideas on your upcoming colonoscopy
1. Regarding clear liquids: make or purchase some bone broth. It will give you some great nutrition.
2. Instead of Gatorade, which is full of gross chemicals, use Code-Red approved electrolyte options:
✅ Electrashred by Unmatched: www.coderedlifestyle.com/unmatched (use promo code, CODERED, for 10% off)
✅ Redmond Re-Lyte: www.coderedlifestyle.com/realsalt (use promo code, CODERED15 for 15% off)
IMPORTANT: Choose flavors that will not be red or orange-colored.
I would have BIG doses of the electrolyte replacement. They just want you to have good electrolytes levels since you will be pooping out so many of them, and Gatorade is just not that great of an option compared with the high-quality, natural options listed above.
3. Sugar-free Jell-o is fine here as well. NOTE: NOTHING RED OR ORANGE-COLORED
4. If you are asked to eat low-residue before the procedure, here are some ideas:
- Well-cooked fresh vegetables or canned vegetables without seeds, like asparagus tips, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, squash (no seeds), and pumpkin
- Tomato sauce (no seeds)
- Avocado
- DAIRY for fats (sour cream, cream cheese)
- Eggs (all forms and all kinds)
5. For after the procedure, stay hydrated. Again, something gentle like bone broth or veggie/chicken broth is a good idea. You may gain weight; please don’t let this bother you. It’s temporary. When you eat, make sure it is bland for the first 24 hours or so.
6. Reminder: nothing red or orange before your procedure. Always follow your doctor’s orders.
From time to time on the CODE RED lifestyle, your weight loss may stall. We have some thoughts and ideas for you! We know it must be frustrating to stall or gain. It is impossible for us to trouble shoot your situation specifically, but here are a few things to keep in mind.
FIRST STOP: watch this video by Cristy https://youtu.be/PBRynCJ30CQ
If you are on a 10 Pound Takedown:
- You need to drink your water every day without fail!
- You need to sleep. You cannot lose weight without sleeping.
- You need to poop. If you are constipated, you will not be able to lose weight.
- You have to follow 100% of the rules 100% of the time.
- Another common reason on a challenge for stalling is due to being sloppy with the food list. A nibble here and a bite there will get you off track.
If you have a CUSTOMIZED (Home Study) Program:
- Post your questions or food logs to the Home Study Coaching group. Make sure that you include information about water, sleep, pooping, and your customized numbers (calories, macros, water amount). Be sure to include screenshots of your food logs.
- Make sure you are following your plan and all of the rules 100% of the time. Doing 80% of the program right will get you 80% of the results.
- Search the video library and lessons for topics that might help you troubleshoot.
- Don’t change TOO many things at once. We will never know what worked and what didn’t.
- ALL of your food needs to be preplanned, pre-measured, and pre-logged before you eat it (ideally the night before).
- Top 3 reasons for a stall: lack of water, lack of sleep and being sloppy with measuring/planning meals. Review the basics of the program, because most stalls are caused by NOT nailing one of the basics.
Thank you for your message about your water bottle. Here are a few things we will need you try before going further.
1. If this is cosmetic damage, we will need photos of the bottle and the outside of the box sent to us.
2. If your bottle is leaking: inside the lid is a washer (it’s made of white/clear plastic). Remove it and then put it back in making sure it is tightly in and that should the trick.
Make sure your cap is straight on the threads and tightened down.
3. If you feel like the bottle is “sucking air”, try turning the straw 1/4 of a turn until it seals in the straw slot. If the straw is seated correctly and still sucking air, you can trim a little of the bottom of the straw.
4. If the cap was broken, we will need photos of the cap and the box.
5. If you have tried all of this and still have a problem, please submit to this ticket email photos, current mailing address.
THANK YOU!

Cari here and I want to share some thoughts about being cold since starting the CODE RED lifestyle. I wish I had a definite answer for you. I have been asked this so many times and I have come up with some good theories.
- You weigh less and you have less fat. Fat = insulation. Less insulation means you are now colder than before. This has been the case for me.
- If you are NEW CR REBEL, being cold is a common sign of detox. Make sure your electrolytes are on point and it will get better!
- Drinking lots of water could be making you colder. Try drinking warm water or even room temp. This has helped many people warm up.
- Not CODE RED RELATED: but if your thyroid is slow you will often feel cold. The thyroid controls your internal temp.
- Low blood sugars- the CR lifestyle will help even out this issue.
- Low iron – heavy periods or low stomach acids can cause this.
- Low B vitamin levels
#4-7 can be addressed by your doctor so please don’t supplement without checking with them FIRST!
- Hormones can shift as you lose weight can also affect how cold you feel. Remember her that hormones are stored in fat cells and are released as we lose weight.
- You may feel colder in between meals and this is normal for CODE RED rebels when you are NOT digesting food. Hang tight and if this is the issue, it will rise at your next mealtime.
Keep in mind that it could be ONE of these or a combo of a few. Be sure to check with your primary care provider if you are concerned.
EVERYONE starting the code red lifestyle struggles with getting their water in. We have put together a list of leader/coach approved tips and tricks for getting your water in every SINGLE day. Pick some and try. You can do this!
*START early. The minute your feet hit the ground start sipping. Have it at your bedside ready to go.
*Do the “10 sip trick” – Every time you pick up your bottle, take 10 sips.
*Never go anywhere without your water bottle. If you have it with you, this will help.
* Be cautious of getting “behind” on drinking the water and having to CHUG it. This is what usually causes problems for people.
* Drink room temp or warm. Cold water can cause nausea for some people.
*Try adding something and see if that helps. Here is an article about that. What can I add to my water?
*CUT out all other beverages. They interfere with water drinking.
*Get a gallon container and a smaller bottle. Keep filling the smaller one until the gallon is gone. No more having to count water bottles.
*Drink the first bottle hot (it relaxes you) with flavoring (like orange Ultima with nutmeg in it, like orange spice tea)
*Set alarms on your phone at specific intervals.
*keep a gallon jug with me at all times to keep filling your water bottle.
*Get a water jug that you enjoy drinking out of one that’s just yours and you want to show off – Code Red personalized one.
*Using a straw makes ALL the difference for some people.
*From one rebel: Don’t be afraid to mix it up. If a straw isn’t working for you anymore, try a gulp lid bottle. Switch it up throughout the day if you need to, going back and forth. I love finishing off my last 16 oz with hot water and a tea bag
From another rebel: a buddy to partner up with and check on each other’s water consumption throughout the day. A lot of times we lose track of time and not realize we’re running behind schedule.

As of Jan 29, 2020 we are not accepting any new ambassadors into the program. Current ambassadors may use their links until 2/17/2020. After that, the referrals will be paid out and all current links will become invalid.
WHY: Great question! We found that after 3 plus months of trying to get it to work properly, the ambassador program was simply not working for our staff or our rebels. We need to find a program that works better so everyone can be less frustrated and be paid what they work for. We are putting ambassador program on hold for the time being.
Thanks for understanding. We want to do the best for you and this program (the design) just wasn’t up to our standard.

Common Code Red Questions
Here at CODE RED, we love our coffee!
You can add the following:
- heavy whipping cream
- monkfruit
- stevia
- sugar free creamer
- MCT oil. Here is one we love due to the flavors! https://amzn.to/2TGT93U
- sugar free syrups unless they cause you to stop losing weight.
- Have you tried coconut cream???? Thick, creamy, yummy and dairy free if you need that. https://amzn.to/3iQ5o98
Things to avoid:
- Coffees from speciality stores. (Starbucks, dutch bros) unless you carefully indicate what you want in your drink. Remember that sugar free doesn’t always mean that you are getting low carbs.
- Half and half. Still a better choice that sugar creamer but it does have a bit more sugar than heavy whipping cream.
CODE RED items that you CAN add to your water
✅ Citrus (lemons, limes, or oranges), cucumbers, or berries as an infusion
✅ Small amounts of lemon or lime juice (but no added sweeteners)
✅ ONE tea bag for flavor (but no added sweeteners)
✅ Electrashred – coderedlifestyle.com/unmatched CODERED for 10% discount (very pleasant taste)
✅ Redmond RE-LYTE electrolyte mix (very salt-forward, so be sure you like salt first – https://shop.redmond.life/collections/re-lyte (CODERED15 for 15% off)
✅ ULTIMA coderedlifestyle.com/ultima (use CODERED for a discount)
👉 Please note that if your chosen electrolyte replacement from the list above causing some tummy upset (runny poop), you might want to cut back the amount you’re ingesting. The magnesium in these products can be a cause of loose stool if you drink too much (and depending on the form of magnesium used). Ultima, especially, may cause loose stools. It is recommended that you start with Electrashred.
Things NOT approved to add:
❌ MIO (or other drops)
❌ Ice tea mixes or crystal light (or anything like that)
❌ Kool-Aid mixes, etc.
❌ ANY non-CR approved electrolyte solution
❌ If it’s not on the approved list higher up on this page, assume it is NOT approved
Yes. Your body REQUIRES this amount of water to flush out the toxins and for normal body function. It gets easier as you keep doing it. Start early and try to finish up by 5pm. If you have kidney or heart problems, be sure to check with your primary care provider.
Great question! NO Cristy doesn’t hate fruit!
We find (over the about 20K people we’ve coached) that fruit other than berries will SLOW weight loss. It is due to the high sugar content and glycemic index. We think these foods are AWESOME and you absolutely should have them. But in order to get your weight off and be in maintenance mode, we recommend that you avoid those foods for a bit. Here is a video Cristy did on the topic that explains really well!
Feel free to exercise. But as long as you are doing it for OTHER reasons than to lose weight. Exercise is NOT a way to address weight loss. Please watch this video:
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats found in foods like coconut oil. They’re metabolized differently than the long-chain triglycerides (LCT) found in most other foods.
MCT oil is a supplement that contains a lot of these fats and is claimed to have many health benefits.
MCT’s are a great way to add fat to your food. Some people put in their coffee. You will NOT want to cook with it because it has a low smoke point. You could add it to your dressing, any drink you make or just take it like a shot because it has NO taste unless you purchase a flavored one. It bypasses the liver and works right where you need it. Start SLOW when adding MCT oil to your diet as for some people it can cause GI upset.

eggs, eggs, eggs
nuts
seeds
greek yogurt
chia seeds (Our personal recipe for no oatmeal) Cari’s NO-Oatmeal (noatmeal) recipe
nut butter
some veggies (kale, brussel sprouts, mushrooms and spinach have good protein)
not sure if you eat fish or not but that is good as well. We know some vegetarians do.
*Being vegetarian makes it more challenging but you CAN do it!
Cari made an awesome video that explains WHY we don’t use flours of ANY kind in weight loss mode.
NO NO NO NO NO! Studies have CLEARLY shown a correlation between diet soda and obesity. CODE RED REBELS stay away from these dangerous chemicals and we have found that soda drinking (even diet) cuts into your water drinking. So NO LaCroix, no other flavored waters, no diet soda. JUST DRINK YOUR WATER. Let your body have a break from the chemicals. CARBONATION: we have found that carbonation (even plain) makes people crave sweets and it is simply NOT needed. BREAK that addiction and just drink your water. NO EXCUSES – NO WORK AROUNDS FOLKS! Trust us! ** Please note that you CAN have the approved items in your water (plain tea bag, infused fruits or veggies, Ultima, essential oils – food grade only)
You have a change in your bowel movements because you have radically changed your eating. You are also getting rid of toxins and chemicals. Give your body some time to adjust. Drink plenty of water. Eat lots of veggies. Lots of items that might help here https://www.amazon.com/shop/coderedlifestyle
We like our rebels to only have Monk Fruit sweetener or Stevia. Both are derived from plants and not full of chemicals.
Here are links to the ones we recommend:
No, they are not a nut. They are a legume. Avoid peanuts and peanut butter and peas.
No. Your body processes and reacts to honey/organic or “natural” sugars/agave the SAME way as white table sugar. You can have Stevia or Monkfruit to sweeten.
Collagen certainly has many benefits and studies are coming out each week to support this. We here at CODE RED have seen the growing trend of taking collagen and it becoming more and more popular. Here are some things to consider if you want to take collagen (or any supplement really):
- WHY are you taking it? What is the research and the benefits behind the product. Doing your own research is so important.
- What is the source of your product? If you are considering collagen/bone broth etc… purchase the best quality you can afford. Is this a grass FINISHED product is one important question to ask.
- Are you seeing results from taking the product?
- What are the calories/carbs/sugar in the product?
CODE RED doesn’t endorse any particular collagen but if you chose to take it, these guidelines are a great place to start, and use at your own discretion.
What once was hailed as a healthy low-fat snack, is actually an calorie laden food that causes inflammation in our bodies and is not good for us at all. Popcorn is made of corn. Corn is a grain and the CODE RED lifestyle says “no grain”. So, try pork rinds instead but no popcorn during the challenge or while eating CODE RED.
Stop trying to WORK AROUND the list. Keep it simple and FOLLOW THE LIST. If you are serious about losing weight, you will stick with what is on the list. You will do great!
UNSWEETENED coconut in VERY SMALL amounts is probably fine, but if your weight loss stops you know why.
We find that “FAGE” full fat yogurt and “The Greek Gods” are great choices. Please pick PLAIN and nothing that is sweetened or has added fruit/honey/etc…
Well of course, too much of anything isn’t good for you. But keep in mind that too much water is generally only case for people who are in extreme situations (heart failure, mental illness, etc) If you weigh less than 135, please drink only 112 ounces of water per day. Otherwise, your gallon a day will be great. Americans are CHRONICALLY dehydrated and when you cut out the soda, coffee and other liquid junk, you will find yourself needing and wanting the full gallon of water.
When we have such a BUSY page like CODE RED LIFE, important information gets lost at the bottom of the page. When we type bump, it moves the post back up to the top of the page. You can type whatever you want, but bump seems to be popular.
This is COMPLETELY normal as you detox off of the sugar and processed foods. This is your body getting rid of the poisons and here are some things that will help…. Get extra sleep and DON’T skimp on water or salt. You will need both! Stay strong! It doesn’t last forever!
Recent studies have shown that it is high blood sugar levels that cause damage to arteries, not the cholesterol you eat. This is a very complicated subject, but here is a video that will help explain. https://drhyman.com/blog/2013/10/09/6-steps-healthy-cholesterol-stop-statins-now/
Also, check out this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22037012/
Do your own research and decide for yourself.
Cow’s milk is FULL of sugar and carbohydrates! As a CODE RED REBEL, you can drink UNSWEETENED almond, flax, coconut or cashew milk.
People are CHRONICALLY dehydrated. You need this water. Just for your body to perform BASIC functions, you need at a bare minimum one half of your body weight in ounces/day. So, yes you need the water and yes, you will be fine.
NSV stands for Non-Scale Victory. This is when something good happens with your weight loss but not necessarily the scale going down. For instance: clothes fit better, sleeping better, feeling better.
You can have FULL FAT mayo/sour cream.
Look for full fat dressings like ranch, Caesar – nothing fruit based or honey based. Stay away from sweet dressings or anything that is low fat.
In the beginning, your body is ridding itself of toxins and extra water weight. Your body is learning to use FAT as fuel and this is a good thing!
CREAM CHEESE AND COTTAGE CHEESE are the only cheeses allowed. After writing HUNDREDS of programs, we have found that eating cheese will STOP your weight loss due to the calorie density of the food. HANDS off the cheese!
Specific calories amounts varies from person to person and IMPOSSIBLE to determine without a custom program. 1. Eat until you are full. 2. Only eat when you are hungry. This will work well if you follow the rules.
ANY veggie is allowed.
Learn to LOVE them! Try new ones. Once you start getting off the processed foods, you will find that your taste buds will change and you will enjoy REAL food. Give it another chance and give it some time!
Purchased Programs or Accountability
Hello weight loss surgery rebel! Since I (Cari) had FAILED weight loss surgery and still lost over 100lbs with the code red lifestyle, I wanted to compile a list of tips and tricks. Those of us who have had gastric surgeries are in a different boat. Read this over and let us know if you have any questions! Thanks! Cari
1. Get your code red cookbook-Turn to the part with the shakes
I want you to start eating at least ONE of your meals a shake. BUT not crap pre-prepared shakes. I mean blended foods. Like almond milk, nut butter, avocado (you won’t taste it) chia, flax and maybe some coconut oil. This should become your norm. SIP, SIP, SIP – go slow. You should be able to get enough to eat this way. If you need a protein powder, this is the CRISTY APPROVED one.
https://www.coderedlifestyle.com/unmatched. Use the code: CODERED for 10% off (applies to one-off purchases only – the code doesn’t work on subscriptions). Look under PRODUCTS ==> Protein. It’s the Unmatched brand whey protein isolate. It’s sugar-free and 100% naturally flavored and sweetened. It also comes in three flavors. They are all delicious!
2. CUT out ALL other beverages & it becomes pretty easy to drink the water. Sip through a straw if you are allowed. Drink your water room temp or warm. Sip constantly. Stay on track. It will take time to work up to your water goal, but you can do it. Remember: NO other beverages to drink until you are getting that water in.
3. Avoid stress or manage your stress as it makes it harder to eat and keep it down being a gastric surgery rebel. If you are upset or stressed, WAIT to eat for a bit.
4. Always eat slowly. Sit down and take your time.
5. Eating and drinking together (as you know from surgery) is a big NO NO. Again stopping at least 1/2 hour before helps.
6. When you have limited stomach space, EVERY bite has to be intentional and count. It is the price we both pay now. So be very cautious and careful with what you eat as far as quality food and you should do fine.
7. You still only need to eat two times a day – a FULL five hours apart. You are not used to it so your body will fight you and tell you that you are DYING of hunger. I totally understand. That feeling gets better after a while. But even us surgery patients don’t need to snack or eat all day. This is why getting in GOOD fats at each meal is vital!
8. It is time to take control from those same old foods that you could “get down”. For me it was Cheeto’s and high calorie sugar drinks. Will it be hard? Yes! But you can finally kick the sugar monster to the curb.
I hope this helps!
This is such a great question and Cristy did a video explaining the answer to this commonly asked question. Check it out here!

We believe food holds the power to heal or poison. We choose foods that heal. We believe that society has been misled regarding proper nutrition and we are committed to spreading the truth. The CODE RED lifestyle brings hope and healing and it’s our job to support, educate, inform, and love our community without judgement. We are CODE RED REBELS.
We know it is super frustrating to have issues with emails and receiving them. Our C.O.O. Cari created a video that might give you some helpful hints and tips.
Other tips and tricks:
1. Check alternate folders, including junk/spam and promotions, not just your inbox. Sometimes email providers put emails in strange places.
2. Click on and open Cristy’s emails when they show up. If you don’t consistently open them, you are telling your email provider that they aren’t important. Your email provider wants you to only get emails you want, and sometimes they misjudge which ones are important to you, and which ones aren’t.
3. Whitelist the email address [email protected]. Here are some instructions explaining what whitelisting means, and how you can do it in several of the most common email providers: https://www.whatcounts.com/resources/checklists/how-to-safelist-emails/
4. If none of the above work, you may need to contact your email provider directly and ask them to mark [email protected] as safe for you to receive emails from.
5. You may need to delete some emails. Many email providers place a limit on how many emails you can store with them. It’s called a quota. If you are receiving and storing a lot of emails, you may be over quota and need to delete some in order for there to be room in your emails for Cristy’s to come through.

After much thought and consideration, CODE RED decided to provide REBELS the option of taking a B vitamin. Our first idea was that it is an essential supplement for our REBELS who have had gastric surgery as they are almost always deficient in B vitamins. But after more research, we learned that lots of people can be low in B vitamins.
Here are some of the common signs and symptoms of B vitamin deficiency:
If you have vitamin B12 deficiency, you could become anemic. A mild deficiency may cause no symptoms. But if untreated, it may lead to symptoms such as:
- Weakness, tiredness, or lightheadedness
- Heart palpitations and shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- A smooth tongue
- Constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or gas
- Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking
- Vision loss
- Mental problems like depression, memory loss, or behavioral changes
WHO might be at high risk for a B vitamin deficiency:
Gastric surgery patients
- Atrophic gastritis in which your stomach lining has thinned
- Pernicious anemia, which makes it hard for your body to absorb vitamin B12
- Conditions that affect your small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, bacterial growth, or a parasite
- Alcohol misuse or heavy drinking can make it harder for your body to absorb nutrients or prevent you from eating enough calories. One sign that you lack enough B12 may be glossitis, or a swollen, inflamed tongue.
- Immune system disorders
- Been taking certain medications that interfere with the absorption of B12. This includes some heartburn medicines including proton pump inhibitors and certain diabetic medications.
- You can also get low levels of VIT B if you follow a vegan diet (meaning you don’t eat any animal products, including meat, milk, cheese, and eggs) or you are a vegetarian who doesn’t eat enough eggs or dairy products to meet your vitamin B12 needs. In both of those cases, you can add fortified foods to your diet or take supplements to meet this need.
How should I take CODE RED’s Methyl B12?
Take ONE tablet in the morning after you wake up. Put it under your tongue and let it dissolve fully.
More information OUR B vitamins
Does not contain wheat, gluten, yeast, soy, animal or dairy products, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, or artificial preservatives.
WHY METHYL B12?
Many vitamin B12 supplements on the market contain cyanocobalamin. The liver is able to convert a small amount of cyanocobalamin to methylcobalamin; however, methylcobalamin is the preferred form since it is the bioactive form and therefore better utilized. In a research study, tissue retention of cobalamin was greater when using the methyl- form versus the cyano- form. This was exemplified by the fact that urinary excretion of methylcobalamin was one-third less that of cyanocobalamin. Another point of interest regarding B12 supplementation is the commonly held belief that intramuscular injections of B12 are more effective than oral supplementation. In fact, oral supplementation is just as effective and carries the added benefits of lower cost and ease of administration

You probably already know how CODE RED eating will lead to weight loss and a host of other possible health benefits, but it may also be the reason your cycle has become irregular or halted completely. CODE RED style of eating has been linked to weight loss and other health benefits, but it can also have a strange effect on your period. Some women report having irregular period, while others say their monthly cycle stopped. Some even start back to having a period after years of not having one. BUT ALSO – Overweight people who lose weight may see periods return. Weight gain often leads to difficulty with ovulation and losing weight may make periods reappear.
First stop: Watch this video by Cristy
There are several theories on why this happens:
- Cutting out processed foods and sugar is often associated with changes in periods however it is likely related to your weight loss itself. As weight drops, so does estrogen levels. This is the hormone partly in charge of regulating your periods.
- Body composition changes can alter GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) levels This is another hormone used in period regulation.
- Leptin is made by the adipose tissue (fat-storing cells) in your body. Its main role is to regulate fat storage and how many calories you eat and burn. Leptin released from adipose cells travels to the brain via the bloodstream when you lose weight. It acts on the hypothalamus in the brain, which regulates hormones in your body
- Adipose cells release all the other molecules they’ve hoarded, too. That includes key hormones like estrogen, along with fat-soluble vitamins and any organic pollutants that found their way into your bloodstream as you gained weight. This is often found to cause hormone shifts as well.
All this to say that hormone shifts are normal during weight loss. Here are some things that might help!
- Be patient and kind to yourself while your hormones are getting adjusted. It is going to take some time.
- NEVER skimp on your water. It will help you flush and regulate.
- You have to keep regular with your bowel movements so your body can get rid of what is not needed.
- If you are feeling “off”, grace yourself with extra sleep/rest.
- How can you take care of yourself during this time?
- If you are concerned, please seek out the advice of your personal care provider. Keep in mind that your eating may not be to blame at all. Missed periods can be a sign of a larger health issue, such as hormone imbalance, genetic abnormalities or PCOS.
People have used their these accounts for CODE RED products. It seems to work best if you pay and then we can send you a receipt. You will need to make SURE you know the specifics of what your program pays and what information they need. We would sugest that you do some research and see what works best and your requirements. If your HSA requires a DRG or billing codes, we won’t be able to provide that. Your best bet for insurance or your health care savings program covering your CODE RED program would be to CALL them and see what they require before making any purchases. Sometimes the cards work with our program and sometimes they don’t. There seems to be some hold up with the way that CODE RED is “categorized” on the payment side. We are HAPPY to give you a receipt of purchase with the specifics that your insurance company needs. Just let us know. Thanks!

"Will CODE RED Work For Me?"
Thank you so much for your email asking about CODE RED and diabetes. Below you will find articles and videos about our lifestyle and diabetes. Of course, we feel that CODE RED eating is the best thing for anyone (type I or II, prediabetes, etc) who has suffered from diabetes. We have many many stories of Code Red Rebelsb (type 2) who were taking insulin and after adopting this lifestyle, are now insulin free! (with the assistance of their physician) In addition, type one diabetics are able to reduce insulin intake. Read through everything/watch/do some research and decide for yourself. Having the information is POWER!
*People who live the CODE RED lifestyle and are diabetic will need to decrease insulin/oral diabetic agents at some point. Please do this with the help of your primary care provider.
FIRST STOP: WATCH THIS VIDEO FROM CRISTY
Next watch this video. It is SHOCKING TED TALK about diabetes from a diabetic doctor who works with obese patients:
*If you chose to eat CODE RED, please keep a careful eye on your blood sugar levels as you find they will decrease.
This is a great news story about using food to heal diabetes: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/20/diabetes-defeated-by-diet-new-fresh-food-prescriptions-beat-drugs.html
This article from the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) is fascinating. Doctors are getting on board! https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2669724
It is a well-known fact that SUGAR/Processed CARBS cause inflammation- this is how diabetics end up with damage to feet (neuropathy) eyes (retinopathy) etc… (the list goes on and on). This article from Vanderbilt discusses the high fat lifestyle and inflammation. https://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/vanderbiltmedicine/study-balanced-high-fat-diet-improves-body-composition-inflammation/
One of our most famous rebels is Rodger Williams of Clarkston, WA. He has lost over 100lbs and kept it off and suffers from terrible gout. He found that as long as he avoided his trigger foods, that he did great. Cutting back on processed foods and sugars also helped his symptoms. Below you will find a link to an article that talks about gout and some common ways to avoid flare-ups. P.S. many of the suggestions are exactly what CODE RED teaches!
We do NOT recommend or endorse breastfeeding while doing the CODE RED program. Please consult your pediatrician and/or OBGYN before changing your eating habits while breastfeeding.
At this time, we do not design/write custom programs for anyone under 18 years old. This is due to liability. However, we think drinking water and eating real food is a great idea at any age. Here are some ideas:
- Check with your pediatrician before starting with the CODE RED lifestyle.
- Purchase the Code Red Revolutionand read through it and implement it TOGETHER! Remember that even small changes in eating, can bring great results. Here is the link to the book. https://www.coderedrevolution.com/book
- Check out the Code Red Kids section of our website! https://coderedlifestyle.com/code-red-kids/

Kombucha tea is a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. Although it’s sometimes referred to as kombucha mushroom tea, kombucha is not a mushroom — it’s a colony of bacteria and yeast. Kombucha tea is made by adding the colony to sugar and tea, and allowing the mix to ferment.
Although many people tout it’s health benefits and there is some truth to the statements, it contains SUGAR and CARBS. So it is an off limit item for CODE RED REBELS in weight loss mode. If you are concerned about getting these live bugs, you can consider taking probiotics. There are many good sources out there that don’t contain sugar.
Hello rebel! You will want to just FLIP your day and your eating. Here are some tips that might help.
- Pack your food. Bring sugar free gum. Have some tea so you can drink when you want to eat. One of the biggest struggle is eating to stay awake when working nights.
- Eat when you wake up…. Wait five full hours and then eat again. After that….. DON’T EAT AGAIN! You will have to go to bed slightly “empty” feeling. Make sure this last meal is HIGH fat and very yummy for you.
- You will be less tired and it is GOOD for you to go to bed empty. The heaviest I EVER GOT (Cari C.O.O.) was working nights, getting off work at 0730 and eating a big breakfast before bed. It will NOT kill you to be slightly hungry. If you are eating high fat, your body will be fine. NOW.. your brain is going to tell you that you are hungry. So…. Try flavored teas, get your water in…etc… but NO eating after you last meal that night.
- NO snacks!
- YOU CAN DO THIS! You will need to pre plan all of your food for the shift. This will help. AVOID the break-room.
First of all, congrats! We believe that eating real food, drinking water and getting good sleep is good for any human. Cutting out sugar and processed foods is a great plan! However, you absolutely should not be trying to lose weight while pregnant, as this is very very dangerous. Here at CODE RED, we suggest that you first of all have a conversation about your eating with your OBGYN and second of all, take good care of yourself and your baby!
One of the best things about CODE RED eating is that we don’t tell you that you HAVE to eat one type of food. You can adjust the food list to your particular allergy.
This is a great question! Traditional Keto focuses on a very extreme process of getting “into ketosis”. They use shakes, pills, powders, test strips etc…. We do not believe in all of this chemical baloney. There is no balance. CODE RED believes in balance. We take a more holistic/entire body approach to weight loss. We believe in eating real food (not just meat and fat). We believe in eating veggies with every meal. We believe in drinking water to flush out toxins and chemicals and to hydrate your cells. We also believe in getting good sleep. Although CODE RED uses the principles of “nutritional ketosis” to help people rid themselves of unwanted pounds, we are very far from traditional keto thinking.
YES! We have helped many people status post gastric surgery (all variations) lose weight forever. The problem with weight loss surgery is that it doesn’t address the REAL problems regarding weight loss. We get right to the heart of the matter here at CODE RED.
YES! We have had many many rebels who have successfully completed the program and lost weight/feel great eating vegan/vegetarian. You will need to reach out for help (we are here for you) if you need assistance. We love our plant-based clients!
Your Body & CODE RED
Acid reflux is when stomach acid gets pushed up into the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach. Some reflux is totally normal and harmless, usually causing no symptoms. But when it happens too often, it burns the inside of the esophagus. The most common symptom of acid reflux is known as heartburn, which is a painful, burning feeling in the chest or throat. In addition to heartburn, common symptoms of reflux include an acidic taste at the back of the mouth and difficulty swallowing. Other symptoms include a cough, asthma, tooth erosion and inflammation in the sinuses.
Acid reflux is a complicated medical issue that should not be left undiagnosed or untreated. However, a little “burpy” reflux/heartburn from time to time seems to be less common with the CODE RED lifestyle because we are avoiding processed foods and sugars. We find that those foods can in some people, make things worse. But if it happens to you, here are some thoughts…
- Apple cider vinegar does tend to make reflux better for most people but for a FEW people it makes things worse. Try it and see. It balances the acid in your stomach. Here is a link to one Cristy uses every day! https://amzn.to/3eceIOI
- Drink your water lukewarm or room temp. NOT COLD! This can make matters worse
- COOK your veggies. Raw veggies can cause increased reflux.
- Don’t eat and drink together. Always separate those activities by ½ hour at least.
- Peppermint tea works well when you are having a flare up.
- Some research suggests that reflux is a sign of an unbalanced gut flora. Code RED probiotics can help if that is the case. You can get them here: https://shop.coderedlifestyle.com/collections/supplements/products/probiotic.We suggest trying it for a month and see if it improves.
- Always sit up after eating.
- Avoid too much coffee (can increase acid production)
- Try sleeping on your back (with head elevated) or your LEFT side. This is due to the position of the stomach when lying on the right.
- IF you are concerned, seek out medical advice from your primary care provider.
So frustrating to be losing weight and then your monthly cycle hits! Well, we do understand that this time of the month can be challenging. Let’s chat about some hints/tips and ideas to get you through this “period” of time.
- Be KIND to yourself during this time – extra sleep – extra water – extra down time if needed. Your body will be a little stressed so treat it well. Can you take a bath or do something to relax?
- Realize that a weight gain or weight stall is normal.
- HOWEVER, this is not an excuse to get off track. Stay the course!
- Know that you might have cravings: Make sure that you have your nice tea to sip and your sugar free gum to chew when they hit. Being prepared for cravings is half the battle.
- For some women, if bloating is an issue you can try a cup of dandelion root tea. It helps detox and gently decrease bloating: https://amzn.to/44dy0k3
- This too shall pass! Hang in there!
- Give your body some time to adjust. You have changed your VOLUME of food and type of food that you are taking in. It is going to take a while for your body to adjust.
- Having regular bowel movements is ESSENTIAL to weight loss. If you don’t go poop regularly you may experience auto-intoxication. This is where you do not poop out toxins and they recirculate back into your system. No good! You need to poop!
- You will need to start and maintain a good bowel plan early, so you don’t become constipated. Once you are regular, don’t abandon all of your interventions. You will want to keep them up to maintain regularity until your body adjusts.
- Start taking COLACE 100mg once in the morning and once at night (this makes your poop soft but is not a typical laxative per say)
- Drink all of your water – every single day – without fail!
- Start with milk of magnesium (MOM) or MiraLAX. You will want to take ONE full dose each day and take this every day until you go poop and then every third day or every other day to stay regular.
- Consider adding chia seeds and ground flax to your daily regimen.
- Get yourself a Squatty Potty or something similar to help you poop. This changes the angle of the colon and makes pooping easier
- A fiber supplement helps many people. Cristy has several on her amazon storefront that will help. Start slow with fiber like this https://amzn.to/3gRiLRS
- For some folks, taking a supplement with GI support is helpful. We love these products. https://amzn.to/31JcS4D or https://amzn.to/32E3HSw
- ALL of these items are on our amazon storefront. https://www.amazon.com/shop/coderedlifestyle
- These are ALL SUGGESTIONS. Not a specific regimen. What works for one person, will not work for another. Our suggestion is that you start with a few and see how your pooping goes. You can add in other things as needed. CONSISTENCY IS KEY to getting regular once again.
- Consider adding chia seeds and ground flax to your meals. It will help bulk your stool and make you more regular.
- Drink chamomile tea / add lemon to your water/tea etc.
- Add fermented foods to your diet (kimchee, sauerkraut)
- Add a good quality probiotic – read more about ours here: www.coderedlifestyle.com/supplements
- Practitioners often use foods with warming properties, such as ginger and garlic ,to help ease loose stool
- Incorporating full fat Greek yogurt is also known to help some people
- The pectin in carrots can also help with loose stool
- Be sure and REHYDRATE with water and electrolytes (as needed)
We have found that due to the amount of water that CODE RED rebels consume, we often need to be diligent about replacing electrolytes. This will likely take care of many of your symptoms. Here are some thoughts. ALSO here is a video Cari did on electrolytes so please watch for more information
- Salt salt salt! (We prefer Redmond Real Salt, found at coderedlifestyle.com/realsalt. Use the code, CODERED15, for 15% off your order). We are not a low-salt lifestyle. Add 1/8th of teaspoon of Redmond Real Salt to each bottle of water that you drink. Here is a great video about salt that is worth watching. https://drhyman.com/blog/2017/11/03/downside-low-salt-diet/
- Consider an electrolyte replacement. We love Electrashred by Unmatched. The ingredients are all-natural and super clean. You can order it at coderedlifestyle.com/unmatched. Enter the code, CODERED, at checkout for 10% off. (Please note that Electrashred is the only product endorsed by us for Rebels in weight loss mode.)
- For cramping, you can try foam rolling and/or gentle stretching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzSU2FiFKTM
- This leg cramp formula taken before bed also helps some clients. https://amzn.to/2NFv71c you can get it anywhere (Walmart/Walgreens/etc)
- A hot bath before bed while soaking in Epsom salts is helpful as well for cramping.
- If you are still concerned, see your doctor. Seek medical advice if you become faint or have heart concerns.
Great question! Here is a video that Cari created regarding Vitamin D.
Let’s take a second to talk about Vitamin D. It is estimated that the majority of the people in North American suffer from chronically low Vit D levels. It is thought that it could be caused by more of us working indoors, the push for everyone to use daily sunscreen and our decreasing food quality due to soil nutrient changes. No matter the cause, it is a concern! Humans need vitamin D for so many of our everyday functions. Listed below are just a very few of the reasons Vitamin D is so vital to your health. Here is a great article that Dr. Hyman wrote about this subject. https://drhyman.com/blog/2010/08/24/vitamin-d-why-you-are-probably-not-getting-enough/
- Maintain the health of bones and teeth
- Regulates insulin levels
- Supports lung function
- Promotes the absorption of calcium and helps prevent osteoporosis
- A potent inhibitor of cancer cell growth
- Helps regulate our immune system
- Aides in regulating high blood pressure
- Plays a role in prevention of infections and chronic diseases
- Plays a role in muscle metabolism and function
- Protects brain cells through detoxification pathways
- Normal serum Vit D levels can help with depression
- Decreases risk of Type I and Type II diabetes
- Has an anti-inflammatory effect in people with irritable bowel disease
WOW – that’s amazing! It is pretty well accepted that Vitamin D is needed and often lacking. So what should you do? Please DON’T head to your local grocery store and pick up a bottle of no name vitamin D. Unless you find a quality source, you will only have urine that is expensive and the Vitamin D will not end up where it belongs. You need to find a Vitamin D that is highly “bioavailable”. (Bioavailability: the proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to have an active effect.)
We think CODE RED VITAMIN D is awesome and we offer it for a good price. Wherever you get it, make sure it is has high bioavailability and that you actually take it!

Cortisol is a hormone related to alertness, so one of its most important jobs is to help keep us motivated, awake, and responsive. Cortisol levels are typically highest in the morning, decreasing throughout the day, and then dropping to their lowest at night, around bedtime. However, when abnormally elevated throughout the day, it can be difficult to fall or stay asleep or you may wake up early feeling wired, but still groggy. This lack of sleep, as we know, can directly impact weight loss.
Stress makes it more likely that you will resort to your old behaviors related to food. Stress hormones can interfere with your mood, sleep, and digestion. So, high stress levels can commonly contribute to sugar and carbohydrate cravings. Also, people who are high cortisol reactors tend to consume more calories on days when they feel stressed.
Stress is one of the leading causes of digestive complaints and disorders, including constipation or diarrhea (both commonly associated with having IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome), acid reflux, and intolerances to certain foods. The reason for this is that stress causes inflammation, which can damage tissue in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This can interfere with proper nutrient absorption and increasing many other symptoms tied to leaky gut syndrome. Not only will indigestion and other symptoms not make you feel your best, but it can make it tough to continue eating a variety of high-fiber, whole foods.
Because stress increases inflammation and weakens the immune system, it can also contribute to symptoms that interfere with sustaining an active lifestyle (lack of energy, slowed workout recovery, frequent illness, and the development of pain, soreness and/or stiffness in your muscles and joints).Your body has different types of fat. The fat under your skin, the fat you can grab or pinch, is called subcutaneous fat. Another, more dangerous type of fat, called visceral fat, is deeper and surrounds your organs. If you have ever seen someone with a “beer belly”, then you have seen someone with a lot of visceral fat. The reason visceral fat is more dangerous is because visceral fat releases the same inflammatory signals that cortisol does. Also, it surrounds your organs, which increases the odds of organ damage. So, stress signals increase your likelihood of storing more visceral fat, while having more visceral fat increases the release of inflammatory signals. This causes a cycle of inflammation and increased visceral fat storage, leading to more inflammation and so on.
Cortisol affects the receptor sites of other hormones, making the cells less responsive to their signals. One example would be with type II Diabetes. This is a disease where your body produces sufficient insulin, however, your body can’t read the insulin signal (insulin resistance). When insulin remains high, your body will not release fat from its fat cells.Another example is in the case of the hormone Leptin. This is a hormone that plays a key role in losing weight. Leptin is a hormone released from your fat cells and acts as a thermostat to gauge how much fat you have and how fast you’re losing it. When leptin levels are high and your brain can read the signal, you feel full and don’t over-eat. If your brain can’t read the signal, you feel hungry all the time.Excessive stress and its concurrent release of cortisol negatively effects the receptors for both insulin and leptin, making it harder for your body to read the signals of those hormones. If your body can’t read the signals for insulin, fat stays trapped in your cells. If you can’t read the signals for leptin, you’re hungry all the time. Both of these place you on an uphill battle when it comes to losing weight.Cortisol’s main job is to provide energy when confronted with a stressor. In ancient times, stress was usually an acute situation. You were being chased by a predator and either fought it or ran away as fast as you could. After the stressor was gone, you went about your day. Today, stress is almost constant. The problem is, our bodies don’t know the difference between a head cold, a verbal spat with a loved one, being chased by a saber-toothed tiger, or a death in the family.
- Take a bath
- Read a book
- Stay out of the kitchen
- Go for a walk
- Get a massage, manicure, pedicure
- Verbally tell yourself that you are going to be ok
- Meditate/Pray
- Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a sleeping pill and get some extra rest.
Once your body realizes that you are going to be ok, the weight will start dropping again.
Don’t use your stress as an excuse. Use it as fuel to keep going and following the program. That is the one constant in your life and the one thing you can control. Don’t fall back onto old habits. If you do that, then you will end up having to lose more weight, which causes more stress, and the cycle continues.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, Code red has some products that might help you. Check out this link below

Code Red has partnered with a Kentucky family farm to bring you the highest quality CBD OIL. You can purchase here: https://shop.coderedlifestyle.com/products/code-red-cbd-oil
Here is a video that Cari did explaining how to use the CBD oil and the super sleeper bundle: https://vimeo.com/626835395
About CBD:
CBD is one of many cannabinoids (compounds) in the cannabis plant. Researchers have been looking at the possible therapeutic uses of CBD.
Two of the compounds in marijuana are delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD. These compounds have different effects.
Until recently, THC was the best-known compound in cannabis. It is the most active constituent, and it has a psychological effect. It creates a mind-altering “high” when a person smokes it or uses it in cooking. This is because THC breaks down when a person applies heat and introduces it into the body.
CBD, in contrast, is not psychoactive. It does not change a person’s state of mind when they use it. However, it may produce significant changes in the body, and it is showing some significant medical benefits.
How does CBD work?
All cannabinoids produce effects in the body by interacting with cannabinoid receptors, which form part of the endocannabinoid.
The body produces two receptors:
CB1 receptors are present throughout the body, particularly in the brain. They co-ordinate movement, pain, emotion, mood, thinking, appetite, memories, and other functions.
CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.
THC attaches to CB1 receptors, but CBD stimulates the receptors so that the body produces its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids.
Benefits of CBD OIL:
CBD may benefit a person’s health in various ways.
According to a 2018 study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6043845/ ), reasons for taking CBD oil include:
- chronic pain
- arthritis or joint pain
- anxiety and depression
- sleep disorder
- migraine
- cluster and other headaches
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- nausea
- cancer
- allergies or asthma
- epilepsy and other seizure disorders
- multiple sclerosis (MS)
- lung conditions
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
*****Here at CODE RED, we are bringing you CBD oil for rest and reduced anxiety before bedtime. We believe that sleep is the cornerstone of good health and weight loss. CBD oil may assist you in achieving a good night’s sleep.
Legality of CBD oil:
The legality can be complex with this issue so please check your own state’s laws regarding Code Red CBD oil. Hemp and hemp-derived products are legal under the Farm Bill, as long as their THC content is less than0.3% which CODE RED CBD oil is. To check CBD laws: https://www.ncsl.org/research/health/state-medical-marijuana-laws.aspx
Code Red CBD oil specifics:
We partnered with McQuady Extractions of Kentucky. McQuady Extractions is a small business that focuses on quality over quantity. All their high-quality hemp is locally grown here in Kentucky, by one farmer with a long lineage of farming. From the seeds being planted in the ground, to their final CBD product, they make sure they are using the finest ingredients. Here are a couple of things that you might want to consider. BUT FIRST.. watch this video by Cristy!
- The gallbladder is the “purse” that holds digestive enzymes that help break down fats when you eat them. Since we eat a high fat lifestyle, this can post a problem as the body now doesn’t have the ability to regulate when the enzymes are released.
- Consider how LONG is has been since your surgery. For some people, where they are at 1 month from surgery will feel differently than how they are doing 1 year from surgery. Things may change.
- For people who are bothered by fats, we suggest shifting to a more plant-based fat and less animal-based fats. This seems to work for lots of rebels.
- Keep a food diary so you can pinpoint which foods bother you the most. For instance, some people will have trouble with bacon but can eat sour cream with no problems. This will be valuable information for you.
- Everyone is unique. Some clients have NO problems without a gallbladder and others struggle.
- Avoid drinking one hour before meals and during meals. This will make digestion easier for your body.
- If you are still having problems, consider talking with your primary care provider about taking digestive enzymes with every meal. You can also get them over the counter under our amazon storefront supplement section: https://www.amazon.com/shop/coderedlifestyle
After much thought and consideration, CODE RED decided to provide REBELS the option of taking all around excellent quality MULTI VITAMIN. Ideally, we would love everyone to eat the rainbow and never need any nutrients or minerals other than our food intake.
However, we recently learned about some shocking information that made us think twice. Our soil is so very depleted that even if we as rebels ate perfectly, we still wouldn’t be able to get everything we needed. SO we decided that we needed to provide REBELS with a CLEAN source of vitamins and minerals with NO extra junk. We don’t want stuff that will make you feel jittery or that hypes up your system. NOPE – just what you NEED for nutritional insurance due to the poor soil issue we are facing. An article and podcast by Dr. Mark Hyman explains: https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/05/17/what-does-your-microbiome-have-to-do-with-soil/
How should I take CODE RED’s multivitamin?

Here are some thoughts about weight loss and hair loss. Over the years, we have had rebels talk about losing hair as they lose weight. Here are some thoughts/info for you.
- Hair is made of protein and when our eating styles changes, our hair can react.
- Your hair is not “broken” nor is it likely permanently damaged. Here is a video that explains what is happening. A larger percentage of your hair is in the “resting phase” and will shed naturally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmMxiKm8Wos&t=64s
- Your hair will return to where it was although likely it may change in some ways. Take a deep breath and calm down. (I know it is scary)
- Here is a supplement that CRISTY LOVES for hair, skin and nails. https://shop.heartandsoil.co/products/skin-hair-nails Discount code: codered
- You can try adding Biotin to your supplement routine https://amzn.to/2OeESnQ
- Nioxin is also an idea that works for many rebels. https://www.nioxin.com/en-US/consultation-tool you can take this quiz to find out what formula is right for you
- Wash your hair less frequently.
- Consider a haircut in the interim to make your hair seem fuller until it starts to grow back.
- Eat a wide variety of veggies from the rainbow. Give your body the nutrients it needs.
- Dry your hair gently and air dry when possible.
- Use quality shampoos and conditioners.
- Seek medical attention if you continue to be concerned. It could be a hormone imbalance such as thyroid.
Cristy has a very concrete stance on this particular subject because in her own words “I was a fat athlete”. That is how she began her journey to discover that exercise has nothing to do with weight loss.
You will absolutely need to cut out the typical foods you would normally eat that prepare you for long-distance or high-intensity training (also known as “carbo-loading”). Those will directly conflict with your weight loss goals. When cutting out those foods like rice, pasta, breads, cereals, oatmeal, etc., and eating only Code Red approved foods, you might notice your athletic performance will temporarily dip while your body adjusts to burning ketones (fat) instead of glucose (sugar/carbs).
However, if you continue eating Code Red foods you will notice that you will become an even better athlete! You will loose weight and body fat and eventually perform better athletically.
I encourage you to get this book if you want to know more about low carb eating and working out: https://amzn.to/2KKrGV5
Sadly, SALT has been blamed for what SUGAR did! We have an amazing video that we think you should watch that explains how increasing your salt levels is essential with eating CODE RED. These ideas of eating low salt are based on outdated dietary guidelines that were written in the 1950’s and not based on science. Here are some amazing thoughts to consider!
- Low salt diets decrease stomach acid and can interfere with digestion
- When you crave sugar, you could be needing salt. This is due to the reward system in the brain becoming hyperactivated when low on salt.

Thank you so much for asking about sagging skin, loose skin and other skin weight loss related issues.
Our fearless leader Cristy did a great video on this topic and we think it is worth a watch!
We have worked with a TON of hypoglycemia REBELS here at CODE RED. We find that when they cut out the processed foods and simple carbs, the incidence of hypoglycemia does decrease thus decreasing the need for “snacks”. It is a vicious cycle of snacking, blood sugar dropping, snacking etc…
Thoughts on WHY hypoglycemia happens: We know that our blood sugar naturally increases when we eat. However, it can increase much higher than necessary when our meals are carbohydrate based and lacking fat. When we eat these disproportioned meals and snacks, our blood sugar starts to look like a rollercoaster with major ups and downs, instead of gradual fluctuations. To put an end to your blood sugar rollercoaster, take a look at what is causing your blood sugar to rise too high in the first place. Is it an overconsumption of carbohydrates? Too little fat? Or maybe both?
When you know the root cause of your blood sugar imbalance, you can then begin making the necessary tweaks to your diet that you need in order to experience freedom from that terrible blood sugar rollercoaster!
One nutritionist with a past history of hypoglycemia writes the following “Instead of eating 6 – 7 “mini meals” per day to “prevent” my blood sugar from dropping, I began eating 2-3 large meals each day. Instead of placing my primary focus on including carbohydrates with each meal and snack, I began to focus on eating more fat with my meals. I began to build my meals around fat, including fatty cuts of protein, nuts and seeds, avocados, and other sources of fat such as oils, butter, ghee, and coconut everything. Carbohydrates no longer played a primary role in my meals and snacks, but I would include a wide variety of vegetables with each meal and eat starchier carbohydrates (such as sweet potatoes) when I felt like it” (Meg Doll, 2018).

Iodine is an essential element that you need to be healthy. It is a very complicated subject and we think that Dr. Ken Berry does a great job explaining it. Cristy and Cari met him at a conference in Texas and they trust his opinion on this subject. Watch his video here:

Here are some thoughts that might help.
- In the CODE RED life, we believe SLEEP is the number one rule in weight loss. You can do EVERYTHING right, but if you don’t sleep you will not lose weight.
- Consider getting a fit bit. They are a low-cost way to get an accurate picture of your sleep patterns.
- Explore this website. There are articles on EVERY aspect of sleep. This link is to a list of healthy sleep habits you can start today. https://sleepfoundation.org/sleep-tools-tips/healthy-sleep-tips You cannot just take medicine to sleep if you are not utilizing the non-pharmaceutical interventions.
- No caffeine after 1200. The half-life of caffeine is very long. So you will still have caffeine in your system at bed time.
- If you need medications to help you sleep, we recommend starting small and working your way up. A melatonin blend or melatonin works well to start with. Here is one brand we like. You can check out ALL of our CR approved supplements here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/coderedlifestyle
- Two other OTC formulas that seem to work well is Benadryl (25-50mg/night) or doxylamine succinate 12.5 (1/2 of a tab) to a full tab/night.
- This is a great article on the importance of sleep. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/sep/24/why-lack-of-sleep-health-worst-enemy-matthew-walker-why-we-sleep
Apnea literally means “without breath.”
There are 3 types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. Of the three types, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA for short) is the most common. This is where there is an intermittent airflow blockage during sleep. OSA can be seen in all age groups, but the frequency increases with age and obesity. This is where the upper airway gets partially or completely blocked while sleeping. It can be caused by weight on the chest or in the neck, weakened diaphragm muscle which causes you to work harder to breath while sleeping.
Symptoms of OSA is loud snoring, gasping for air while sleeping, and stopping to breath while sleeping. There are behaviors that can help with these symptoms such as side sleeping, elevate the head of your bed and losing weight. Testing needs to be ordered by a medical provider to see the severity of the sleep apnea. During a sleep study, a respiratory disturbance index (RDI) is evaluated. This is an average number of episodes of apnea, hypopnea and arousals from sleep due to a respiratory event per hour of sleep.
Treatment for OSA is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). This is a machine that will give a constant pressure via a nasal mask or face mask to help push the obstruction out of the way. This pressure is set during a sleep study that would include looking at your respiratory effort, brain waves, vital signs and oxygen needs. Another treatment for OSA is losing weight. As you reduce your weight by 10% you can reduce your RDI by up to 26%. Other benefits of losing weight is lowered blood pressure, improved snoring and sleep structure, and improved pulmonary function. As one loses weight this can change the pressure that is needed in the CPAP machine. There is also a need to have your mask (face mask or nasal mask) to be refitted because of the weight loss. If there is a leak in the mask and the seal is insufficient, the pressure from the machine is not enough to keep the obstruction out of the way. Your durable medical company can help you with the mask fitting. If you are having to tighten your mask to make a seal you need either a new mask or to be refitted.
The only way one should stop using the CPAP or treatment for OSA is from a provider. No one should just stop using a machine without being retested. As the weight comes off, the medical provider needs to kept in the loop. Another sleep study, either in lab or at home study, needs to be completed to see if there is a decrease in the RDI, arousals and oxygen needs. No one should just stop using the treatment because they feel better.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is the cessation of the respiratory drive resulting in the lack of respiratory movements. During sleep your breathing is disrupted because there is a lack of communication from your brain to your diaphragm and lungs. The major difference between OSA and CSA, during CSA your brain doesn’t tell your muscles to breathe. Treatment for CSA is normally BiPap. This is a machine that has 2 level of pressure. A higher pressure that gives a breath and augments your own spontaneous respiration. The lower pressure is a pressure that keeps the airways open.
If one has CSA, stopping treatment should not happen without being retested. This retest should be an in lab study.
Some people that eat CODE RED will experience a sudden onset on bad breath or metallic taste. WHY does this happen: Well, simply put when your body breaks down fat for energy instead of carbs, it converts the fatty acids into chemicals called ketones. It then disposes of the ketones through both exhalation and urination
Here are some thoughts about this that might help!
- People eating CR experience these symptoms LESS because of the water we drink. So make sure that you are drinking 100% of your water each day.
- Eating extra veggies will raise your complex (good) carb numbers and should lessen the symptoms. (leafy greens, carrots, onions, squash, beets are moderate carb veggies)
- Chewing sugar free gum
- Although this is a chemical issue always make sure you are performing GOOD oral hygiene (brushing/flossing)
- Focus on fat and not protein. Make sure you are getting your good quality fats in with each meal.
If you have just started into the fat burning lifestyle and have developed a red itchy rash, first ouch! I know it can be miserable. Some people have called it a “keto rash”. Since CODE RED isn’t traditional “Keto” we don’t see it as often. It CAN be your body having an allergic reaction to the ketones that you are burning. However I do have some thoughts…
- Give it time. For most people it clears up in a few weeks
- Make sure that your electrolytes are SPOT ON! Like mag, salt, electrolytes. Some research suggests that being deficient in those can make it worse. Try the ACV drink EVERY night. (search our knowledge base for the apple cider vinegar drink and info about electrolytes)
- Avoid friction of clothes and sweat (shower soon after sweating)
- If it lasts, you can talk to your dr about antibiotics. Last resort. BUT STOP SCRATCHING THEM!!!! Keep the rash clean and dry.
Feel better soon!
Other people have reported increased bruising when changing their eating. Our conclusion is that it is diet change related. Other theories…..
- Less fat to “pad”
- Vit C being low
- Vit K being low
You might want to try incorporating more of these foods into your diet. Eat the rainbow! Increase your amount and variety of veggies.
However, if you are concerned please see your primary care provider.
Cholesterol initially goes high with eating a high fat lifestyle because…when we lose weight and our fat cells shrink, it releases triclycerides and cholesterol which are stored in fat cells. Our body can use the triglycerides for energy but we cannot use the cholesterol for energy. So it initially increases the circulating level of cholesterol in your blood stream until it can be digested and released through the bile in our liver. Over time, the serum levels of cholesterol go down. CODE RED is not a traditional “keto” diet, but this video is helpful to explain what is going on.
We here at CODE RED love apple cider vinegar (ACV) and the following is some information about WHY we love it and how you can incorporate it into your life.
- Here is a great article outlining WHY we love ACV. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-proven-health-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar#section5
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9ufol934kg a great video on ACV and some alternative uses that you may not have thought of.
- We suggest taking ACV in the morning as it will start you out right and give you a boost of energy.
- For some people, the apple cider vinegar will cause them to have a bowel movement. So, you will want to be close to a bathroom the first time you try it.
- There is a recipe available for the Apple Cider Vinegar electrolyte replacement and it is available in our FAQ section.
- This is another great video about the benefits of ACV and why it works. https://youtu.be/XeHl5Y7m1xM
- Extra water: your body needs water to help flush out the sickness. You can drink your water warm, with a tea bag or even cold if that feels better – but you need to keep up on your water intake.
- Extra sleep: Don’t try to make it through being sick without sleeping more. When you sleep, your body regenerates and repairs. You need this time!
- Don’t stray from the food list! Lots of people are tempted to eat crackers and soda when sick. NOT worth it to eat these sugar/carb heavy foods. If you are nauseated, don’t eat and just sip fluids.
- If you are hungry eat bland foods. Plain chicken breast, sugar free jello if needed, chicken/beef/veggie broth.
- Try making/purchasing some bone broth. Here is a recipe: https://wellnessmama.com/5888/bone-broth/ (but there are lots of recipes out there) This stuff is nutritious and will keep you hydrated.
Common CODE RED recipes
